Fort Wayne Komets News Release
Fort Wayne, IN â The Komets earned 3 points in week 22 of the 2004-05 UHL campaign and find themselves in a heated race for playoff position. Rockford moved 2 points ahead of the Komets for first place in the Western Conference with 10 games remaining on the season for each team. Adirondack continues to dominate the Eastern Conference while Muskegon tops the Central Division.
Thursday the Komets dropped a 3-2 shootout at Wings Stadium in Kalamazoo. Chris Grenville (RW) and Colin Chaulk (C) scored for the Komets in regulation while Kevin St. Pierre made 29 saves on 31 shots in his 100th Fort Wayne career game and 6th straight start. Scoring Komet shootout goals were P.C. Drouin (LW), netting a pair, and Danny Stewart (LW). It was a UHL record breaking shootout going 15 rounds and 30 shooters.
Friday the Komets turned back the visiting Port Huron Beacons 5-3 for their 2nd straight home win. Jonathan Goodwin registered his 6th 2-goal outing of the season. Dustin Virag (RW), Troy Neumeier (D) and Drouin scored a goal each. Goaltender Tyler Masters got the start for the Komets stopping 26 of 29 Beacon shots for his 14th win of the season. It was the last meeting of the year between the Komets and Port Huron with Fort Wayne sweeping the season series 6-0-0.
Saturday the Komets were clipped by the Kalamazoo Wings 5-2 on Fort Wayne ice. Sean Venedam (LW) and Goodwin scored markers for the Komets. St. Pierre started the game and made 6 saves on 8 shots before leaving due to injury after one period of play. Masters backstopped the Komets in 40 minutes of relief allowing 3 goals on 29 shots. The Komets stopped all 7 Kalamazoo power plays to extend their successful penalty kill streak to 23 (291:58).
This week the Komets remain home to host the Rockford IceHogs Friday at 8pm and the Missouri River Otters Saturday night at 7:30. Friday night's match against the IceHogs could be a preview of the first round of playoffs. Rockford, Kalamazoo and Danbury appear to have the best possibilities of facing the Komet's in the first round of post-season action as the playoff race for position and home-ice advantage heats up with 3 weeks of the season remaining.
