
Komets extend unbeaten streak to six games

Fort Wayne, IN - The Komets (25-15-2-8, 60 points) maintained pace at the top of the IHL earning four points out of a possible six to continue to trail first-place Port Huron by three points at the end of week 18 of 2008-09.
The week started with a 4-3 shootout loss at Muskegon Wednesday. P.C. Drouin, Leo Thomas and Mark Versteeg-Lytwyn scored in regulation for the Komets. Komet netminder Nick Boucher suffered the shootout loss after making 19 saves on 22 shots in regulation and overtime. Fort Wayne was 0-3 in the shootout while Muskegon was 1-3.
Friday the Komets dropped a 4-3 shootout loss to the visiting Kalamazoo Wings to remain unbeaten in regulation at home four straight games. Mathieu Curadeau, Rick Varone and Konstantin Shafranov each scored for the Komets in regulation. The Komets were 1-4 in the shootout with Shafranov scoring the lone Fort Wayne shootout goal. Komet goalie Boucher registered his sixth shootout loss of the season stopping 19 of 22 shots in 65 minutes of play. Kalamazoo was 2-4 in the shootout.
Sunday the Komets completed the week with a 5-4 overtime victory at Kalamazoo. The win extends Fort Wayne's unbeaten streak to six games while pushing their road unbeaten streak to seven games. Komet goaltender Sebastien Laplante earned his seventh win of the season making 16 saves on 20 shots in regulation and stopping all three shots faced in overtime.
The Komets have earned points in each of their last six straight games and have not lost in regulation since their 4-0 shutout loss to Port Huron on Fort Wayne ice Jan. 30.
13 Komet games have needed extra time to decide a winner this year. The Komets are 2-2 in overtime games this season
while registering a 1-8 record in shootouts.
There have been four penalty shots in Komet games this season, none resulting in goals. Three penalty shots have been
awarded against the Komets will all three being stopped by Komet goalie Nick Boucher. The first penalty shot awarded to
the Komets this season came in Sunday's 5-4 overtime victory at Kalamazoo in which David Hukalo missed in the third
period.
Streaking Komets.....Goaltender Sebastien Laplante has a five-game unbeaten streak (3-0-1-1) after back-stopping the Komets to their 5-4 overtime win at Kalamazoo Sunday.....Center Mathieu Curadeau is riding a six-game point scoring streak (3 goals, 6 assists).....Winger David Hukalo has assists in each of his last three games (3 assists).
Looking ahead to week 19 the Komets will be idle until they skate at Flint Friday at 7:30pm. It will be the 10th meeting of the season with the Komets leading the series 7-1-0-1, 4-0-0-1 in the last five meetings. The last-place Generals lost both games played last week and are 1-5-0-1 in their last six outings. The Generals skate a rare Monday afternoon game this week at Bloomington before welcoming the Komets Friday.
The Komets will complete the week hosting the Kalamazoo Wings Saturday night at 7:30. After Sunday's 5-4 overtime win at Kalamazoo, the Komets are 4-3-1-3 against the Wings this season. Saturday's game will be the 12th of 16 meetings this season between the Komets and Kalamazoo. The Wings host Muskegon Friday before traveling to Fort Wayne Saturday.
Bird Watch: Fans can see Komet mascot Icy the Eagle this Saturday, Feb. 21, from 2pm-4pm at the Verizon Kiosk in Glenbrook Square Mall. Icy will be on hand to meet and great and sign autographs for all Komet fans and visitors.
