Fort Wayne, IN | By Doug Gruber | Thursday, Oct. 7, 2010 --- The Komets got a look at their rookies Thursday night in a pre-season match against the Dayton Gems at the Memorial Coliseum in Fort Wayne.
The K's skated away with a 3-2 exhibition win.
With 3 regular defensemen sitting out the contest so coach Al Sims could evaluate the newcomers, veteran Sean O'Connor scored the first Komet goal 13 minutes into the first period on a power play. Less than a minute later rookie Tyler Fletcher scored to give the K's a 2-0 lead.
Dayton scored the only goal in the 2nd period to close the Komet lead to 2-1.
Five minutes into the 3rd period Komet rookie Joe Bluhm gave the K's a 3-1 lead which turned out to be the winning goal when Dayton made it 3 to 2 with 3 minutes remaining in the game.
Each team gave their goalies some ice time. Nick Boucher (10/10) and Kevin Reiter (12/14, win) shared time for Fort Wayne while Guillaume Piche (16/18) and Jonathan Olthuis (19/20, loss) split time between the pipes for Dayton.
Both teams will head to Hara Arena in Dayton for each team's second and final preseason tune-up Saturday at 7:30pm. There will be no Fort Wayne radio broadcast of the game.
The Komets will open their 59th season of hockey in Fort Wayne Saturday, Oct. 16 at 7:30pm against the reigning CHL Champion Rapid City Rush. Tickets for all regular season home games are on sale at the Coliseum Ticket Office or online at ticketmaster.com .
