Columbus and Fort Wayne Agree to Affiliation
October 7, 2010 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
Fort Wayne Komets News Release
Fort Wayne, IN | Thursday, Oct. 7, 2010 --- The Komets announced Thursday that an affiliation has been formed between the NHL's Columbus Blue Jackets and the Fort Wayne CHL team for 2010-11.
The Komets will be entering their 59th season of minor league play in Fort Wayne and first season as an affiliate with the Blue Jackets who are celebrating their 10th anniversary as a member of the NHL. Columbus also carries an affiliation with the AHL's Springfield Falcons.
"Since Columbus started in the NHL 10 years ago, we have entertained the thoughts of being affiliated with them because of their geographic location and solid reputation in the NHL and the Columbus area," Komets general manager David Franke said. "We anticipate Columbus/Springfield players coming to Fort Wayne before our opening night and there will be call-ups to Springfield from Fort Wayne which should be of special interest to our younger developing players. Komet fans will have a closer link to the NHL through this affiliation with the Blue Jackets."
The Komets will embark on their first season as a member of the Central Hockey League after collecting three straight IHL Turner Cup Championships. The Komets open the 2010-11 campaign with their 59th home opener Saturday, Oct. 16, at 7:30pm against last year's CHL champion Rapid City Rush. The Komets have won four straight season openers and while riding a six-game home opener winning streak, the Komets are unbeaten in regulation in 15 consecutive home opening games (13-0-2).
The Komets have two preseason tuneups on tap, one at home and one on the road. The Komets will host the Dayton Gems tonight at 7:30pm at the Coliseum. Dayton will then host the Komets in exhibition play at Hara Arena Saturday, Oct. 9 at 7:30pm.
Preseason games will not be broadcast on Fort Wayne radio. All games broadcast during 2010-11 will be aired on News Talk 1190 WOWO and webcast at www.komets.com at Xfinity KometCast with Bob Chase celebrating his 58th season behind the Komet microphone.
