Charlotte Knights News Release

FORT MILL, SC- The Charlotte Knights wiped out the Norfolk Tides 5-1, allowing them to improve their lead in the International League South by 15 games. The win gave the Knights their fiftieth win of the season, something they didn't accomplish last year until August 22.

White Sox pitcher, Cliff Politte, was first on the mound for Charlotte, pitching the first two innings while on a rehab assignment from Chicago. Politte, who was scheduled to pitch a maximum of 35 pitches, gave the Knights a good show while pitching 1.2 innings, allowing only one hit.

Knuckleball specialist, Charlie Haeger, replaced Politte in the second inning, pitching 7.1 innings, allowing four hits and giving up only one run.

The Knights got things started in the first inning with Josh Fields hitting an RBI single to center field. Casey Rogowski followed Fields with an RBI before Ryan Sweeney also hit an RBI single, giving the Knights an early three run lead.

The Tides remained quiet most of the game but came alive in the seventh with Victor Diaz leading off the inning with a double to right field. Designated hitter, Jacob Cruz, walked to put two men on, before Chase Lambin reached first on a fielder's choice. Left fielder, Tagg Bozied, gave the Tides their first run as he hit into a fielder's choice, allowing Diaz to score.

The Knights retaliated in the bottom of the seventh with Jorge Velandia and Fields both reaching base with singles to center field. Center field also proved to be a lucky spot for Andy Gonzalez as he hit a two run single, allowing the Knights to extend their lead 5-1.

The Tides tried to narrow the score in the eighth, but Jerry Owens made an amazing catch at the wall in left field to deny the Tides a run.

Starting pitcher for the Tides was former Charlotte 49er, John Maine, who suffered the loss after pitching six innings. Maine had eight strikeouts, but gave up three runs and was handed his fifth loss of the season.

The Knights will take on the Tides again tomorrow night as Heath Phillips faces off against the Tides, Jason Scobie with first pitch slated for 7:15 p.m.
