TONIGHT'S GAME: The first of a four game series and the first of 12 meetings with the Indians, the first of six at Victory Field. Game one of an eight game road trip. The Braves were 4-8 vs. the Indianapolis last season, 2-4 at Victory Field. This is the 21st of 48 games vs. West Division opponents, Richmond is 8-12 vs. the West Division. The 8th of 24 road games vs. West Division opponents (Richmond is 3-4). The Braves are 51-66 all- time vs. Indianapolis. The Braves are fourth in the South, 23 games behind first place Charlotte. The Indians are first in the West by a game over Louisville an Toledo.
TUESDAY'S GAME: The Pawtucket Red Sox beat the Braves 8-5 Tuesday at The Diamond. The Red Sox rallied from five runs down to earn a sweep of their four game series with the Braves. Richmond lost for a club record 12th straight time. The Braves batted around in the third inning to open up a 5-0 lead. Jamal Strong knocked in two runs with a double. Brayan Pena and Carlos Mendez had RBI singles The Braves added a run on a wild pitch. The Red Sox breached the scoreboard in the fifth inning on a Dustin Pedroia sacrifice fly. Pawtucket tied the game batting around in the sixth inning to score four runs. Adam Stern chased two runs home with a single. Pedroia singled a run in. Corky Miller added an RBI double. The Sox moved in front to stay with a three run seventh. An error extended the inning and Trent Durrington's two run single gave the Paw Sox the lead. Alejandro Machado added an RBI single. Marc Deschenes earned the win with five innings of shutout relief. Peter Moylan took the loss. Pedroia had three hits for the Red Sox. Mendez had three hits for the Braves.
THE STREAK: The Braves have set a club record by losing 12 straight games. The previous record was 11 in a row last season from June 30 to July 10. The Braves have dropped 14 of their last 15 games. They have been swept three straight four game series. Three defeats came in extra innings. The Braves have been out-scored 69-38 over the course of the losing streak. eight of the losses have come at home. The Braves lost all eight games to Pawtucket this season. That is the first time the Braves have ever gone winless vs. an IL opponent in a season series. The all-time Richmond IL record for consecutive losses is 14 by the 1959 Richmond Virginians.
CALL-UPS: Scott Thorman became the 14th R-Brave called up to Atlanta this season when he was promoted Saturday. That equals the total for all of last season. Thorman was in the top five in the IL in batting average, home runs, RBI, slugging percentage, hits, and extra-base hits at the time of his promotion. The Braves have made 73 roster moves this season.
NUMBER CRUNCHING: Jamal Strong has hits in nine straight games (10-37 .270). Brayan Pena has hits in six straight games (11-24 .458). He is nine for his last 18. Braves pinch hitters are 3-21 (.142). Carlos Mendez has hits in four straight games (8-20 .400). Bill McCarthy has hits in three straight games (4-16 .250). Michael Ryan has hits in the last six games he's started. The Braves have 10 or more hits in four of their last five games and 49 in their last four. Tuesday, the Braves ended a streak of four straight games in which opponents scored first inning runs. Richmond has not had a stolen base in their last nine games. The Braves pass the halfway mark of the season today. The Braves are last in the IL in ERA and hitting with runners in scoring position.
