Knights Walk off over Chiefs

Syracuse Mets News Release

The Syracuse Chiefs, Triple-A affiliate of the Washington Nationals, fell to the Charlotte Knights, 2-1, Saturday night at BB&T Ballpark. Micah Johnson drove in both runs for the Knights, including a walkoff double in the ninth inning, to give Charlotte the win and even the series.

Charlotte (20-15) took a 1-0 first inning lead for the second straight game to start the series. Johnson hit the first pitch of the bottom of the first from Scott McGregor barely over the left-field wall to give the Knights the lead.

Syracuse (16-20) went hitless until the sixth inning. Emmanuel Burriss finally broke up Kyle Drabek's no-hit bid with a single to right field with one out. It took just one more batter to get hit number two. Left fielder Tony Gwynn, Jr. doubled, moving Burriss up to third. Burriss scored a batter later on a groundout by Darin Mastroianni to square the game at one.

Those were the only two hits Drabek would allow in his six innings of work. His opponent, McGregor, turned in his third straight outstanding start for the Chiefs, allowing just a run on eight hits in seven innings. McGregor walked and struck out two each, lowering his ERA to 3.20.

The game stayed tied until the bottom of the ninth. Manny Delcarmen walked Kevan Smith to start the inning. Smith moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Drew Garcia. The Chiefs then turned to left-hander Rich Hill to face Johnson. Charlotte's second baseman sliced a 1-2 pitch over the third-base bag, with Smith scoring ahead of a Gwynn throw for the game-winning run.

The Chiefs and Knights play the rubber game of the series Sunday afternoon at 2:05. Bruce Billings is scheduled to pitch for Syracuse opposite Chris Beck for Charlotte.
