Clippers Erase Five-Run Deficit, Stun PawSox in 13

(Pawtucket, RI) - Columbus third-baseman Audy Ciriaco hit the go-ahead RBI single in the top of the 13th inning, then made a spectacular catch in foul territory in the bottom half to end the game with two runners on base as the Clippers rallied from 5-0 behind to beat the Pawtucket Red Sox, 6-5, on Friday night in front of 5,601 fans at McCoy Stadium.
Pawtucket centerfielder Rusney Castillo homered twice and doubled, all in the first five innings, while starting pitcher Henry Owens tossed six brilliant shutout innings as the PawSox led 5-0 after seven innings. But Columbus scored three runs in the eighth, then rallied for two two-out runs in the ninth to set the stage for the extra-inning victory in a game that lasted 3 hours and 54 minutes.
Ciriaco's one-out RBI single in the 13th came against the fourth Pawtucket hurler, reliever Dayan Diaz (0-1). It scored James Ramsey, who had lined a double to left field one batter earlier. Then in the bottom half of the frame, the PawSox put runners on first and second against Dustin Molleken on one-out singles by Luke Montz and Deven Marrero.
Humberto Quintero then flew out to center for the second out of the inning. Quintin Berry followed and lifted a foul pop on the third base side, which Ciriaco raced towards in a full sprint. With the vast foul territory at McCoy Stadium keeping the ball in the field of play, Ciriaco caught the ball as he crashed into the padded wall and fell into the suite level.
Molleken earned his first save of the season, while C.C. Lee was credited with the victory after escaping a bases-loaded, one-out jam in the 12th. Lee struck out Allen Craig after an 11-pitch at-bat, then got Bryce Brentz to fly out to shallow center.
Jonathan Aro made his Pawtucket debut behind Owens and pitched a scoreless seventh inning, but then allowed three runs in the eighth highlighted by Francisco Lindor's two-run triple. Dalier Hinojosa then entered for the PawSox in the ninth with his team holding a 5-3 lead.
A walk and a single left runners on first and second with none out, but Hinojosa then struck out Adam Moore and Ryan Rohlinger. Down to a final strike, Columbus centerfielder Michael Martinez ultimately lined an RBI single to center on a 3-2 pitch to make the score 5-4.
Lindor followed Martinez and jumped on Hinojosa's first pitch for a game-tying RBI single to center. After Pawtucket went down in order of the bottom of the ninth, Hinojosa stranded a man at third in the 10th during a controversial inning.
Two consecutive Clippers hitters were called for batter's interference during the frame, and Columbus manager Chris Tremie and first-baseman Jesus Aguilar were each ejected arguing the first of those calls. Diaz pitched scoreless ball in the 11th and 12th to keep the game tied at 5, while Shawn Armstrong (10th and 11th) and Lee (1-1, 12th) kept the Pawtucket offense at bay in extra innings.
Castillo drilled a double off the centerfield fence in the first inning, then a three-run home run to right against Columbus starter Nick Maronde in the third. He smashed a solo shot to left off of Maronde in the fifth to put Pawtucket ahead 4-0 and would finish the game 3-for-5 with four RBI and a walk.
Marrero's RBI single against Maronde in the sixth made the score 5-0. Owens allowed only three hits and one walk while striking out five in his six innings of work.
Game three of the series is scheduled for Saturday night with first pitch at 6:05pm. Right-hander Jess Todd (1-0, 2.08) is expected to start for the PawSox while the Indians counter with righty Toru Murata (2-0, 2.89).
