FORT MILL, S.C. -The Charlotte Knights built an early lead, scoring four runs in the first two innings, and rode the pitching staff to an easy 6-1 win over the Columbus Clippers at Knights Stadium Tuesday night.

Greg Norton (3-for-4) and Roosevelt Brown (1-for-3) each had solo home runs, while Brandon McCarthy was dominate on the other side of the ball, allowing just one run on two hits in seven innings.

Wilton Guerrero and Norton had back-to-back singles in the bottom of the first to get the Knights offense rolling. Guerrero scored on the sacrifice fly from Brown, and after moving around to third on a fielder's choice from Jorge Toca, Norton scored on the RBI-single from Brian Anderson.

After McCarthy retired six of six batters, the Knights went to work again in the second. With one out, Felix Martinez reached base on balls and moved to third on Guillermo Reyes' double. Both scored an out later on Norton's second hit of the night, this one a double up the middle.

To fall just a triple short of hitting for the cycle, Norton added a solo home run in the fifth to put the Knights ahead 5-0.

The home run came after McCarthy allowed his first hit of the game in the top of the fifth, a two-out double to Andy Cannizaro. Kevin Thompson got the second hit of McCarthy, also a double, and scored the Clippers only run on his wild pitch in the sixth.

Brown's solo shot in the seventh gave the Knights bullpen another insurance run. After Dave Sanders and Matt Smith worked a little, Kevin Walker got into a one-out, bases-loaded jam in the ninth, but turned it into a save situation by getting a double play ball to end the game.

The Knights and Clippers play the final game of the series tomorrow at 7:15 p.m. Dennis Ulacia (2-3, 6.59 ERA) will take the mound against Jorge De Paula for the Clippers.
