
Knights Power Past Tides 12-6 on Monday

(UPOWN CHARLOTTE, NC) -- The Charlotte Knights used an eight-run second inning and a solid start from RHP Jordan Stephens to power past the Norfolk Tides by a score of 12-6 on Monday night in the opening game of their four-game series from BB&T Ballpark in Uptown Charlotte.
Stephens (1-1, 2.19) was sharp in his second career Triple-A outing. The 25-year-old right-hander allowed just one earned run (three runs) on five hits over 6.1 innings en route to his first career Triple-A win. Stephens, who is ranked as the number 16 prospect in the Chicago White Sox system by Baseball America, walked two batters and struck-out four.
Offensively, the Knights put together their highest run total of the season with a 12-run outburst on Monday. The team did most of their damage during their eight-run second inning, which is the most in an inning this season. Second baseman Eddy Alvarez helped break the game open in the second inning with a two-run triple. Alvarez later homered in the seventh inning, his second of the season. He finished the game 2-for-3 with two runs scored, the triple, the home run, and three RBIs.
Additionally for the Knights, first baseman Matt Skole, catcher Kevan Smith, left fielder Jacob May, third baseman Patrick Leonard, and right fielder Mason Robbins all had two hits apiece. Robbins had three RBIs, while Smith had two doubles in the game. As a team, the Knights had 14 hits, which included four doubles on the night.
The Knights will continue their four-game series against the Norfolk Tides on Tuesday from BB&T Ballpark. Tuesday night is Star Wars Knight at the ballpark and the first 2,000 fans will receive a special T-Shirt presented by Atrium Health. Pre-game radio coverage of Tuesday's 7:04 p.m. game will begin at 6:50 p.m. on 730 The Game ESPN Charlotte and CharlotteKnights.com. The "Voice of the Charlotte Knights" Matt Swierad and long-time Knights radio broadcaster Mike Pacheco will have the call for all of the action.
KNIGHTS KNOTES: The Knights welcomed 8,048 fans and 735 dogs to BB&T Ballpark on Monday for Bark in the Ballpark presented by Williams Subaru of Charlotte... 3B Patrick Leonard had two RBIs on Monday... 1B Matt Skole scored three times on the night... Before the game, the Chicago White Sox added outfielder Michael Saunders to Charlotte's active roster. Saunders was signed by the White Sox organization as a free agent.
