Syracuse Mets News Release
Buffalo, NY - The Syracuse Chiefs dropped the first game of their season long eight-game road trip to the Buffalo Bisons, 8-5, Monday night at Coca-Cola Field. The Bisons scored three runs off a Chiefs bullpen that had pitched to a 2.99 ERA on the season coming into the game. Jason Martinson and Yadiel Hernandez both homered for the Chiefs in the win.
Syracuse (19-22) jumped out to a first-inning lead against Chris Rowley. Irving Falu walked and Hernandez singled to start the inning. Three batters later, Matt Reynolds hit a two-run single to left field to give the Chiefs a 2-0 lead.
Buffalo (17-16) answered right back in the bottom of the first inning. Dalton Pompey and Tim Lopes each singled off Austin Voth, setting up runners on first and third for a Rowdy Tellez sacrifice fly that cut the lead in half. Then after a walk with runners on first and third, Danny Jansen stole second, and Lopes scampered in from third after the throw down to second to tie the game.
Jason Martinson led off the second inning with his first home run this season over the fence in left to give the Chiefs a 3-2 edge.
But Buffalo went right back to work in the bottom of the second. Darnell Sweeney doubled and Roemon Fields singled to start the frame. Two batters later, Lopes tripled to the right-field fence to plate both runners for the Bisons first lead of the game. Tellez then grounded out, but brought in Lopes from third for a 5-3 Bisons advantage.
The Chiefs would cut the score to 5-4 a half-inning later on Hernandez's eighth home run of the season and first with Syracuse.
An unearned run against Rowley tied the game for the Chiefs in the sixth. Tuffy Gosewisch hit a fly ball to left which was dropped after Sweeney and Fields bumped into each other in left center. Then with Gosewisch on third, he scored on a passed ball to tie the game at five.
But the Herd went to work against the Chiefs bullpen starting in the seventh. Tellez hit an opposite field home run with two outs off Austin Adams to give the Bisons the lead for good. From there, Adams hit Jansen with a pitch, and he moved to second on a throwing error on Adams on a pick off attempt. Lourdes Gurriel, Jr. then doubled in Jansen from second.
Jason Leblebijian capped the scoring in the eighth with a solo home run off Christopher Smith for an 8-5 Bisons lead.
The Chiefs and Bisons return to Coca-Cola Field Tuesday night at 6:05 p.m. LHP Tommy Milone is scheduled to start for Syracuse opposite RHP Luis Santos for Buffalo.
