International League Names Players of the Week
Published on May 21, 2018 under International League (IL1) News Release
The International League announced today that Lehigh Valley first baseman Joey Meneses and Colunbus right-handed starter Shane Bieber have been named the League's Batter and Pitcher of the Week for the period from May 14-20. Meneses becomes the League's fisrt player to claim multiple weekly awards in 2018 (April 30-May 6) and combines with the previous Pitcher of the Week Cole Irvin to make the IronPigs the first team to collect three weekly awards. Bieber is the first member of the Clippers to be so honored this season.
JOEY MENESES, Lehigh Valley IronPigs IL BATTER OF THE WEEK The International League's top hitter so far in 2018 has been Joey Meneses, and he didn't slow down this week as the IronPigs fight to stay on top in the North Division. Over the past seven days Meneses paced the League with eleven hits, a .478 batting average, four home runs, seven runs scored, seven extra-base hits, and a remarkable 1.174 slugging percentage. He's hit safely in fifteen of his last sixteen games overall, and this week he crushed a home run in four straight games including a solo shot in the 9th inning of Friday's 2-1 victory over Syracuse. Meneses leads the IL this season with a .368 batting average and .658 slugging percentage, and he's currently tied for 3rd in both home runs and extra-base hits.
26-year-old Joey Meneses is in his eighth season as a professional player and is currently in his first year seeing time above the Double-A level. He signed with the Phillies as a free agent this past February after having spent his entire career in the Atlanta organization. Meneses is a native of Culiacan, Mexico.
SHANE BIEBER, Columbus Clippers IL PITCHER OF THE WEEK Highly-touted pitching prospect Shane Bieber picked up his first win at the Triple-A level on Sunday, capping an impressive week in which he allowed just one run on eight hits without walking a batter over a League-high 14.2 innings of work. He appeared to be headed for his first win Tuesday when he departed his outing against Gwinnett with a 3-1 lead, but the bullpen couldn't hold the edge in an eventual 5-4 Clippers extra-innings victory. Bieber was on top of his game Sunday, tossing 8.0 scoreless innings of three-hit baseball with eight strikeouts as Columbus defeated Charlotte, 2-1. Bieber now has an ERA of just 1.32 through his first four starts with the Clippers since being promoted from Double-A Akron on May 3.
22-year-old Shane Bieber is in his third season since being selected by Cleveland in the 4th round of the 2016 draft. He has yet to make his Major League debut. Bieber is a native of Orange, California.
