Charlotte Knights News Release
(Toledo, OH) - Jordan Danks has always excelled at the plate against the Toledo Mud Hens. He continued that trend on Wednesday.
Danks launched his seventh career home run against the Mud Hens, Charlie Leesman allowed just one run over six innings, and the Charlotte Knights beat the Mud Hens 5-1 on Wednesday at Fifth Third Field in Toledo, OH in game two of their four-game series. The win was the Charlotte's third-straight and sixth over their last seven games.
After a day off on Tuesday, Danks returned to the lineup on Wednesday against a team he has enjoyed hitting against in his career. The Texas native hit two home runs against Toledo in both the 2010 and 2011 seasons and now has three home runs against the 'Hens this year.
In the eighth inning, with the Knights ahead by just one run (2-1), Danks took reliever Collin Balester deep for a three-run shot over the right field wall. It was his eighth home run of the season and second in five June games. He finished the night 1-3 with the home run and three RBIs.
Leesman (6-4, 2.40) earned his sixth win of the season - tying him with teammate Charlie Shirek for tops on the Knights this season. He allowed just one run, three hits and two walks over six innings en route to his fourth win over his last five games.
Charlotte (35-26) got off to a good start on Wednesday - scoring the game's first run in the top of the first inning. Tyler Kuhn led off the game by roping the fourth pitch of the night over the center field wall for his third home run of the season. The Knights quickly gave Leesman a 1-0 lead.
Two innings later, Kuhn started things off again, this time with a single. Two batters later, Dan Johnson hit an RBI single to score Kuhn for Charlotte's second run of the game. The RBI was Johnson's team-high 46th of the season. Both runs came off Toledo starter Thad Weber (4-4, 3.05), who allowed two runs over seven innings and was saddled with the loss.
The Knights improved their lead in the division over second place Gwinnett, who lost to Lehigh Valley by a score of 5-1. The Knights now lead the G-Braves by 1.5 games in the South Division.
On Thursday, the Knights will battle the Mud Hens in game three of their four-game series. RHP Terry Doyle, the reigning International League Pitcher of the Week, will take the ball for the Knights. Toledo will counter with LHP Andy Oliver. First pitch is set for 7:00 p.m.
