Gwinnett Stripers News Release
ALLENTOWN, PA - The Gwinnett Braves dropped their third straight game on their 10-game road trip as they fell to the Lehigh Valley IronPigs 5-1, Wednesday night in game two of the four-game series. The Gwinnett loss, coupled with a Charlotte, 5-1, win at Toledo drops the G-Braves 1.5 games in back of the Knights in the International League South Division standings.
The 'Pigs did all their damage in the second inning off Gwinnett starter Yohan Flande. Kevin Frandsen walked to lead off the inning, then Cody Overbeck reached on an infield single and Steve Susdorf was hit by a pitch to load the bases with nobody out. Michael Spidale followed with an infield single, scoring Frandsen with the first run of the game. Lehigh Valley pitcher Tyler Cloyd singled to left to score Overbeck to make it 2-0. Flande then walked Andres Blanco with the bases loaded to force across Susdorf which gave Lehigh Valley a three-run lead. Michael Martinez followed Susdorf with an RBI single that plated Spidale for a 4-0 lead. Domonic Brown then hit into a 4-6-3 double play that scored Cloyd with the fifth and final run of the inning.
For the second straight night, the G-Braves had very little offense. Their only run came in the top of the fifth when Stefan Gartrell led off with a double to right, then scored on a single to right by Christian Marrero. Marrero was thrown out at second trying to stretch his hit to a double.
Flande (L, 2-4) gave up five earned runs - all in the second inning - along with six hits and four walks alongside four strikeouts. Dusty Hughes worked a scoreless sixth with one hit and Anthony Varvaro pitched a scoreless seventh as he allowed one hit, two walks and struck out three. Cory Gearrin pitched a scoreless eighth and surrendered one hit.
Cloyd (W, 5-1) worked eight strong innings, and allowed just three hits, one earned run and yielded one walk while he struck out seven in the win. Cloyd also had a fine night at the plate, going 2-for-2 with a single, double and an RBI.
The only G-Braves' hits came from Felix Pie, Gartrell and Marrero. In the two games played in this series at Lehigh Valley, Gwinnett has scored only two runs on five hits and has struck out 19 times.
For the IronPigs, Cloyd, Overbeck and Martinez each had two hits and Spidale was 3-for-4 with an RBI.
The G-Braves (33-27) continue their road trip Thursday with game three of the four-game series in Allentown against Lehigh Valley (33-26). Right-hander Kris Medlin (0-1, 15.44 ERA) is scheduled to start for the G-Braves against the 'Pigs right-hander Scott Elarton (5-2, 3.55 ERA). First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. from Coca-Cola Park. Listen to the broadcast on WDUN AM 550 in Gainesville, Georgia with Tony Schiavone calling the play by play.
