Yankees Win Third Straight with 9-4 Victory over Bulls

Durham, NC - Ramon Ortiz (WP, 4-3) tossed 7.0 innings of three run baseball and Francisco Cervelli, Russell Branyan and Brandon Laird combined to drive home seven runs as Scranton/Wilkes-Barre (32-26) picked up a 9-4 win on Wednesday night in the second game of a four game series with the Durham Bulls (26-34) to win their third straight game.

Branyan picked up on Wednesday where he left off on Tuesday. The Yankees slugger who homered in each of his final two at bats in the opening game of the series, hit his third homer in his first at bat in game two of the series as Scranton/Wilkes-Barre jumped on former Yankee Lance Pendleton (LP, 2-2) for one run in the second and two in the third inning. Leading 1-0 in the third inning following the Branyan homer, the Yankees added two more runs on a Jack Cust RBI single and the first of three runs batted in from Cervelli on a sacrifice fly to right.

Ramon Ortiz (WP, 4-3) kept the Bulls off the board until the fourth inning when the home team plated a run on a triple from Stephen Vogt and an RBI ground out from Henry Wrigley to cut the lead to 3-1. Wrigley continued to punish Yankees pitching following up a four hit night with three runs and three RBI's on Tuesday, with three more hits, two runs and two runs batted in on Wednesday. The Bulls slugger hit his second homer of the series; a solo shot in the eighth inning off Juan Cedeno to close out the scoring at 9-4.

Cervelli picked up his second and third runs batted in with a two run single in the fifth inning, coming off Pendleton. Ronnier Mustelier led off the inning with a single and Cust doubled him to third before Cervelli's two run single gave SWB a 5-1 lead. Pendleton suffered the loss against his former team tossing 5.2 innings allowing five runs on nine hits, with four walks and seven strikeouts.

Brandon Laird gave the Yankees their biggest lead of the night at 7-1 in the seventh with a mammoth shot over the 32 foot high "Blue Monster" fence in left center field. Laird's third homer of the season knocked in Branyan who was walked by Bulls reliever Josh Leuke to open the inning.

Durham finally got to Ortiz in the home half of the seventh inning cutting the lead to 7-3, picking up two runs and four hits off the Yankees starter in what would be his final inning of work. A double from Wrigley led off the inning and he moved to third on a single by Leslie Anderson. Chris Giminez knocked in the first run of the inning with a sacrifice fly to left and after a Jeff Salazar single moved Anderson to third, Reid Brignac drove home another run with a SAC fly. Ortiz finished allowing six hits and three runs with one walk and two strikeouts in his 7.0 innings of work.

Ramiro Pena made it an 8-3 game with an RBI double off Leuke in the eighth scoring Chris Dickerson who walked and stole second. Branyan's RBI single to right for his second run batted in on the night made it 9-3 heading to the bottom of the inning. Wrigley's solo shot off Cedeno closed out the scoring at 9-4.

The Yankees and Bulls continue the four game series on Thursday night from Durham Bulls Athletic Park with a 7:05 PM first pitch. Right hander Nelson Figueroa (3-2, 4.54 ERA) will start the second game of the series for the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre while right hander Jim Paduch (2-3, 3.82 ERA) will start for the Bulls.
