NORFOLK-LORE: The Rochester Red Wings tonight play the 2nd game of their 4-game series vs. Norfolk (Orioles). Rochester started the 8-game homestand by taking 3 of 4 from Columbus (Indians) before losing yesterday's series opener against Norfolk 6-4. Following this 4-game set with the Tides, the Wings will embark on their longest roadtrip of the season, a 9-day, 8-game adventure to Indianapolis (Pirates) and Louisville (Reds). Rochester has 4 other 8-game trips, but all are 8 days long.
ROSTER NEWS: Right-handed pitcher Steve Hirschfeld yesterday was promoted from Double-A New Britain to start tonight's game against Norfolk. The 26-year-old went 4-4 with a 3.20 ERA in 11 starts with the Rock Cats. He was selected by the Twins in the 9th round of the 2007 First-Year Player Draft.
a Hirschfeld becomes the 13th different starting pitcher used by the Red Wings, the 3rd summoned from New Britain (Luke French and David Bromberg). He is the 5th pitcher and 8th player overall to make the jump from the Rock Cats.
a Only Norfolk has used more starting pitchers in the International League with 15. Lehigh Valley (Phillies) has used the fewest with 6. Rochester used 18 different starters in 2011.
STILL DOING ALL RIGHT: Despite last night's 6-4 defeat, the Red Wings have still won 5 of their last 8 games and are 11-10 in their last 21 games beginning May 15. The Wings tonight look to avoid losing back-to-back games for the first time in more than a week. They lost 4 in a row May 25-28.
a Rochester yesterday committed a season-high 3 errors for the 2nd time, matching their effort from April 19 against the Empire State Yankees at Frontier Field.
a Also yesterday, the Red Wings didn't issue a walk in a game for the 6th time. They enter tonight having gone 14 consecutive innings without allowing a free pass.

a Leading Red Wings candidates include Anthony Slama, owner of 9 saves, a 0.40 ERA, and a 17.0 consecutive scoreless innings streak; and Matt Carson, who leads Rochester with a .285 average, 53 hits, 19 extra-base hits, 15 doubles, 17 RBI, 78 total bases, and 24 runs scored. Slama is tied for 5th in the league in saves while Carson is tied for 4th in doubles.
