November 9, 2004 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Spokane Chiefs News Release

Spokane Chief forward Chad Klassen has been named to the Team WHL roster and will participate in the 2004 ADT CHL Canada-Russia Series. The Series will feature Team WHL taking on the Russian Selects in games in Red Deer at the Enmax Centrium on Wednesday, December 1st and in Lethbridge on Thursday, December 2nd at the Enmax Centre.

The TEAM WHL Rosters for each game will be announced later this month.

Klassen is currently 11th in the WHL in scoring with seven goals and 20 points. His 14 games played are the fewest for any player in the top-20 in scoring. The 19-year-old from Warman, SK enjoyed a career season a year ago with 35 goals and 91 points, tied for sixth in the WHL. Klassen was the Chiefs first round selection in the 2000 WHL Bantam Draft and has appeared in 187 career games. Dating back to October, 2002, Klassen has appeared in 149 consecutive games.

The WHL also announced that Willie Desjardins, Head Coach of the Medicine Hat Tigers and Curtis Hunt, Head Coach of the Regina Pats, will serve as assistant coaches for Brent Sutter, General Manager and Head Coach of the Red Deer Rebels and of Hockey Canada's 2005 World Junior Team will be the Head Coach of Team WHL.

Sutter, a native of Viking, Alberta and former WHL grad with the Lethbridge Broncos, is in his sixth season as a General Manager/Head Coach for the Red Deer Rebels, capturing the WHL and Memorial Cup Championships in 2001. The Rebels also won three straight Eastern Conference Championships from 2001-2003.

Desjardins is in his third full season as the Tigers bench boss and last season led the Tigers to the WHL Championship, the team's first WHL title since the 1987-88 season. The native of Climax, Saskatchewan, is also a former Lethbridge Bronco.

Hunt is in his first season with the Regina Pats after leading the Moose Jaw Warriors to their first Division title in the team's 20-year history in 2003-04. Hunt, from North Battleford, Saskatchewan, played in the WHL for the Prince Albert Raiders, winning the Memorial Cup in 1985. He was also the WHL finalist for Coach of the Year in 2003-04.

The ADT Canada/Russia Challenge Series represents the final opportunity to evaluate WHL players prior to Canada's National Junior Team selection camp in mid-December.
