
Simplot, Wheaties to salute Minor Hockey Week

Brandon, Manitoba - The Brandon Wheat Kings, in conjunction with Simplot Agribusiness have announced plans to salute Manitoba Minor Hockey Week at this Thursday's Western Hockey League game at the Keystone Centre against the defending Western Conference Champion Everett Silvertips.
In recognition of Minor Hockey Week - November 7th - 14th - Simplot and it's western Manitoba liquid retailers have purchased blocks of tickets so that close to thirty teams will have the opportunity to travel to Brandon for the traditional Remembrance Day game.
Among the communities planning to be represented at Tuesday's game are Treherne, St. Claude, Swan Lake, Glenboro, Neepawa, Hamiota, Brandon, Kenton, Virden, Elkhorn, Miniota, Tri-Town, Minnedosa, Souris, Strathclair, Shoal Lake and Boissevain.
In recognition of Manitoba Minor Hockey Week, players from Treherne and Neepawa will be participating in Thursday's ceremonial opening face-off. Performing the duties will be 8-year old Hayden Gates of the Treherne Novice and 12-year old Nigel Harris of the Neepawa Pee Wee Natives.
Participating retailers include Timmerman Enterprises (Treherne), Pembina Co-op (Mariapolis), Twin Valley Co-op (Birtle and Miniota), Double Diamond Farm Supply (Boissevain), Redfern Farm Services (Neepawa, Virden, Brandon, Hamiota, Rivers, Minnedosa and Souris) as well as Shur Gro Farm Services in Brandon and Shoal Lake.
In addition to the tickets, all children attending Tuesday's game will receive a full color poster of Washington Capitals' first round draft choice Ryan Stone. A four year WHL veteran, the 19-year old Winkler product was recently chosen to the WHL all star team that will face off against the Russian Junior Selects next month in the 2004 RE/MAX Canada Russia Challenge. During the club's recent 7-game western road swing, Fehr notched his 100th career WHL goal.
Thursday's game will be the first of a mini 2-game home stand for the Wheat Kings, who will host the Tri-City Americans on Friday night. Thursday's game will also mark the first ever appearance in Brandon for the Silvertips, who lost out to the Medicine Hat Tigers in last year's WHL Championship final.
Everett is coached by former National Hockey League bench boss Kevin Constantine. Entering Tuesday's game in Moose Jaw against the winless Warriors, the Silvertips are sitting in second place in the U.S. Division with a 9-5-2-2 record, good for 22 points and just two back of the front running Seattle Thunderbirds.
Friday's game vs. Tri-Cities will feature a special Salute to former Brandon University Bobcat basketball coach Jerry Hemmings - the winningest coach in CIAU history.
Brandon enters this week's home stand with a 7-6-3-1 record, good for 18 points and second place in the WHL's Eastern Division.
Tickets to both games this week are on sale now at the Keystone box office, by calling 726-3555 or on line at ticketmaster.ca The box office will open at 1 p.m. on Remembrance Day.
