Saint John Sea Dogs News Release
SAINT JOHN, NB --- Veteran Saint John Sea Dogs centre Michael Kirkpatrick set a new franchise record for most all-time goals scored on Friday night, netting the 84th marker of his career during a 7-2 home win over the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles. The Sea Dogs are now 9-0-0-0 at Harbour Station this season and 16-3-0-1 overall.
Zack Phillips (2), Stephen MacAulay, Steven Anthony, Gabriel Bourret, and Kevin Gagné also found the back of the net for the home team on Friday, while Cory MacIntosh and Morgan Ellis replied for the Screaming Eagles. Between the pipes, the goaltending tandem of Jacob DeSerres (13 saves) and Frédéric Piché (14 saves) joined forces to backstop Saint John to victory, with Alexandre Veronneau (19 saves) suffering the loss in net for Cape Breton.
After Screaming Eagles Captain Morgan Ellis gave the visitors a 1-0 lead in the 17th minute of play, second-year blue-liner Gabriel Bourret tied things up at one apiece on a bullet of a long-range wrist shot that struck twine at the 17:15 mark of period number one. Zack Phillips and Jonathan Huberdeau both picked up assists on Bourret's marker, his fourth of the season.
Sophomore sniper Zack Phillips gave the hosts their first lead of the night early in the second period, ripping a loose puck past a sprawling Veronneau to make the twelfth goal of his season of the power play variety. The Sea Dogs then went up 3-1 courtesy of veteran rearguard Kevin Gagné, who one-timed a picture-perfect cross-ice pass from Michael Kirkpatrick to the back of Cape Breton's net to wrap up a two-on-one rush in style 8:51 into the middle frame.
Vancouver Canucks prospect Steven Anthony put the home team up by three at the 34:35 mark of the match, snapping home his fifth of the year shortly after accepting a crisp pass from Kirkpatrick in close proximity to Cape Breton's goal crease. Cory MacIntosh then tallied his second goal of the year 55 seconds later to send Friday's intradivisional showdown into the second intermission with the score 4-2 in Saint John's favour.
The Sea Dogs proceeded to net three unanswered goals during a highly-productive third period, with Zack Phillips banking in his second of the night 9:03 into the stanza and Stephen MacAulay burying a feed from Ryan Tesink at the side of the visitors' net a minute later. Michael Kirkpatrick then scored his record-setting tally in the 59th minute of play, tipping a Guillaume Cloutier shot past Veronneau to pull ahead of fellow Cape Bretoner Ryan Sparling for the #1 spot on Saint John's all-time goals list.
Up next for the Sea Dogs is a Saturday night showdown with the Saguenéens at Harbour Station. The puck drops at 7:00pm as Saint John looks to improve to 10-0-0-0 on home ice this season by scoring their seventh straight head-to-head victory over Chicoutimi.
