Brandon Wheat Kings News Release

Brandon, Manitoba - The Western Hockey League's Brandon Wheat Kings trimmed their roster by one Thursday afternoon with the decision to designate veteran Sanfred King for reassignment.

A 19-year old local product, King was entering his third season in the WHL. However, the former AAA Midget Wheat King is coming back from a broken leg that he suffered last January that kept him off skates for close to eight months.

"We felt at this time this would be the best decision for Sanfred," says Brandon coach and general manager Kelly McCrimmon. "He needs to regain his timing, regain his confidence and this will enable him to do that."

During his two years in Brandon, the 6'2" 196 lb King scored three goals and 14 points in 98 career games.

It's expected that a decision will be made over the weekend on where King will play to start the 2009-10 campaign.

Thursday's announcement leaves the Wheat Kings with thirty players on their roster - three goalkeepers, 9 defencemen and eighteen forwards. Of those, six are still away at National Hockey League camps. That list includes Brayden Schenn (Los Angeles), Scott Glennie (Dallas), Colby Robak (Florida), Matt Calvert (Columbus) and imports Toni Rajala (Edmonton) and Alexander Urbom (New Jersey). While Rajala continues to recover from an off-season knee injury in Edmonton, Urbom recently came to terms on a 3-year Entry Level contract with the Devils.

On the ice, the Wheat Kings bring the curtain up on their 2009-10 regular season this weekend with back to back road games in Prince Albert and Regina on Friday and Saturday nights respectively. Both games can be heard on 880 CKLQ.

Brandon's Home Opener is Friday, September 25th vs. Swift Current. Tickets to the 2009 curtain raiser are on sale now at the Keystone Centre box office (Pioneer Lounge), by calling 726-3555 or online at ticketmaster.ca
