Cincinnati Cyclones News Release
TRENTON, New Jersey - Rookie Jimmy Kilpatrick netted his first professional hat trick to help pace the Cincinnati Cyclones to a 4-3 win over the Trenton Devils on Sunday afternoon. Fellow rookie Mark Van Guilder was a part of all the scoring, picking up a goal and three assists in the triumph-which puts the Cyclones two games above the .500 mark.
The Cyclones scored the only goal of the first period, as Jimmy Kilpatrick stuffed home his ninth goal of the season from the right goalpost at 4:59. Mark Van Guilder and Justin Johnson had the assists on the opening goal. The shots on goal were even at seven apiece in the first frame.
For the tenth time this season, Cincinnati surrendered three goals in a period, but responded with a pair to knot the scores at three apiece. Jeremy Akeson's second goal of the year at 3:54 tied the game and Eric Castonguay's first goal of the day on the powerplay at 5:20 gave Trenton the lead. The Cyclones evened the scores at 14:19 when Kilpatrick notched his second of the day from Van Guilder and Frederic St. Denis. Less than two minutes later, Castonguay picked up his second score of the day and ninth of the season on the powerplay at 15:44, to give the Devils the 3-2 edge. Kilpatrick completed his hat trick at 17:54, slipping a puck underneath Charlie Effinger on the powerplay, to even the scores. Van Guilder and St. Denis had the helpers. Cincinnati outshot Trenton, 13-11, in the middle stanza.
The game winning goal came 10:41 into the third period, as Van Guilder rifled home his seventh goal of the season from Donny Grover. Van Guilder has the game winning goal in each of the two games between the squads this season. The shots on goal battle was won in the period by Trenton, 8-4, and for the game the Devils held the upper hand, 26-24.
Martin Houle collected his eighth win of the season, stopping 23 shots. Charlie Effinger suffered the defeat, turning away 20 shots.
