Winston-Salem Dash News Release

Winston-Salem, NC - Frederick registered a season-high 22 hits on their way to a 15-3 dismantling of Winston-Salem in the series opener on Thursday night at Wake Forest Baseball Park. The Keys did all of their damage in the first six frames and handed the Dash their worst defeat of the season.

The 15 runs and 22 hits were the most surrendered by Winston-Salem this season. The previous poorest pitching performance for the Dash occurred on April 25, when they surrendered 13 runs on 16 hits yet still managed to defeat Wilmington 14-13. Even with all of the offense, Frederick made noise defensively by turning a triple play in the seventh inning.

The Dash actually scored first when first baseman Seth Loman deposited a pitch from Zach Britton over the right field wall with one out in the bottom of the second inning. The solo shot was the ninth home run of the season for Loman. The Keys answered right back in the top of third inning as Brandon Waring and Caleb Joseph connected on back-to-back, two-out RBI singles to put Frederick in front 2-1.

The Keys broke the game open with four runs in the top of the fourth as five of the first six batters tallied hits to start the inning. Wally Crancer smacked an RBI double and Billy Rowell followed with a run-scoring single. After a one-out double by Pedro Florimon put runners on second and third, Dash starting pitcher Levi Mawell was pulled in favor of Wander Perez. Robbie Widlansky greeted the new hurler with an RBI single and a fielding error on the play allowed another run to score which gave Frederick a 6-1 lead.

Maxwell (4-11), who returned to the rotation following the promotion of Johnnie Lowe to Double-A Birmingham, only lasted 3.1 innings and allowed six runs (five earned) on eight hits. He suffered his 11th loss of the season which ties him with Wilmington's Mario Santiago for the most in the league.

The onslaught continued after Salvador Sanchez delivered an RBI single in the bottom of the fourth inning for the Dash. The Keys came back with a six-run fifth inning highlighted by a three-run blast off the bat of Waring. It was Waring's 19th round-tripper of the season, which is second most in the league, and it extended Frederick's advantage to 12-2.

Again, the Dash would muster a run in the bottom of the fifth before the Keys added three more in the top of the sixth inning to stretch their lead to 15-3. Britton (8-5) was the beneficiary of the offensive outburst as he tossed 5.1 innings and allowed three runs on eight hits to collect the win.

The Dash loaded the bases with no outs against Brian Parker in the bottom of the seventh, but the rally was quickly stymied by a rare triple play. Brent Morel popped out to first baseman Robbie Widlansky in foul territory. After the catch, Widlansky threw to the plate to prevent Tyler Kuhn from tagging and scoring from third. Justin Greene, who was on second to begin the play, was caught off base by catcher Caleb Joseph which initiated a rundown. Kuhn then broke for the plate and was eventually caught in a rundown of his own and tagged for the second out. In the process, the remaining two runners, Greene and Dale Mollenhauer, were both left standing on second base. Greene would be tagged out to finalize the triple play.

Winston-Salem and Frederick continue their four-game series with game two on Friday night at Wake Forest Baseball Park. The Dash will send RHP Anthony Carter (10-5, 4.23) to the mound, while the Keys are expected to start LHP Rick Zagone (0-3, 5.89). The first pitch is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.

The current home stand for the Dash runs through Sunday, August 9 at Wake Forest Baseball Park. Promotions include Thirsty Thursday and Fireworks following Friday night's game.
