Potomac Nationals News Release
WOODBRIDGE, Va.- The Potomac Nationals announced today that outfielder Francisco Plasencia has been promoted to Double-A Harrisburg before the P-Nats begin their four-game series with the Wilmington Blue Rocks from Pfitzner Stadium. No accommodating roster move has been made as of yet.
This will be Plasencia's first trip up the Double-A ranks after signing with the Milwaukee Brewers as an undrafted free agent in 2001. He joined the Nationals in 2004 and has spent parts of three seasons with the P-Nats.
This year, Plasencia is enjoying his best year in the Carolina League, hitting .274 with 10 home runs and 48 RBI in 91 games with the P-Nats. He sizzled through the month of July, hitting .330 with four home runs and a league-leading 22 runs batted in. In that month, in which he won the Potomac Nationals Player of the Month Award, Plasencia compiled an on-base percentage of .390 with an OPS of .922.
Plasencia also enjoyed the longest hitting streak of the season for any Potomac Nationals player, a 20-game stretch from June 17-July 13 in which the outfielder hit .375 and carried a .459 on-base percentage. The 20-gamer was the second longest in the Carolina League this season.
The Venezuelan-born Plasencia enjoyed his best power season in the minor leagues in 2007 when, in 107 games between Hagerstown and Potomac, the lefty hit 15 home runs with 49 RBI. During last year's run to the Carolina League title, Plasencia added a much-needed boost to the lineup after his callup from Hagerstown, hitting .278 with five home runs and 45 runs batted in. He also had a home run with three RBI in five games during the postseason.
Plasencia is just the second position-player to earn a promotion from Potomac to Harrisburg, following catcher Sean Rooney up to the Senators roster. Plasencia will also rejoin his 2009 P-Nats teammates as pitchers Erik Arnesen, Clint Everts, Carlos Martinez, Atahualpa Severino, Brad Meyers, and Jeff Mandel have excelled in their time in the Eastern League.
The first-place P-Nats begin an all-important four-game series with the second-place Wilmington Blue Rocks at Pfitzner Stadium on Thursday with first pitch scheduled for 7:05 ET.
