Myrtle Beach scored seven runs in the bottom of the sixth inning and five more in the seventh in a 13-4 rout over Lynchburg at BB&T Coastal Field Thursday night. The Hillcats will attempt to even the four-game series when the two teams meet Friday at 7:05 p.m.

The Pelicans drew first blood with a run in the top of the second. Lynchburg starter Matt McSwain allowed consecutive singles to Jesus Sucre and Chris Shehan to start the frame. After McSwain struck out Benji Johnson, Randy Gress delivered and RBI single that plated Sucre and gave Myrtle Beach a 1-0 lead.

Lynchburg struck back with a run of its own in the top of the fourth. Kris Watts hit a two-out single off Pelicans starter Erik Cordier and advanced to second on a fielding error by Shehan in right field. Watts scored on an RBI single from Jared Keel to even the score at 1-1.

The Hillcats seized the lead with a pair of runs in the top of the sixth. Chase d'Arnaud laced a double down the left-field line off Cordier to begin the inning. d'Arnaud reached third on Matt Hague's one-out single. Watts followed with an RBI groundout that plated d'Arnaud and Keel drove in Hague with an RBI single, which gave Lynchburg a 3-1 advantage.

Myrtle Beach answered with seven runs in the bottom of the frame. Sucre singled to start the inning and scored on a one-out RBI double from Johnson that landed in the left field corner. After Gress flew out to right field, McSwain issued consecutive walks to Cole Miles and Michael Fisher to load the bases. Moises Robles replaced McSwain and gave up a two-run infield single to Donell Linares. Cody Johnson followed with a ground-rule double and Gerry Rodriguez hit a three-run home run that gave the Pelicans a commanding 8-3 lead.

The Cats reduced the deficit in the top of the seventh when Eric Fryer belted a solo home run - his first in 28 games with Lynchburg - to make it an 8-4 contest.

Myrtle Beach put the game away with five runs in the bottom of the seventh. Shehan hit a leadoff double and scored when Gress deposited the first pitch he saw from Robles into the left field seats for a two-run home run. Cole Miles followed with a single before Robles struck out Fisher and yielded a single to Linares.

Paul Mildren came on to replace Robles and promptly walked Cody Johnson to load the bases. Rodriguez drove in Miles with an RBI single and Sucre followed with a two-run single that extended Myrtle Beach's lead to 13-4.

Cordier (6-4) allowed eights and three runs - two of which were earned - to earn the victory for Myrtle Beach. McSwain (9-7) gave up nine hits and five earned runs in 5 2/3 innings of work and was charged with the loss.

Lynchburg will try to snap its three-game losing streak in game two of the four-game set at BB&T Coastal Field Friday night. Game time is set for 7:05 p.m.
