Potomac Nationals News Release
TODAY: A pivotal matchup in the Carolina League Northern Division begins tonight from Pfitzner Stadium where the Potomac Nationals host the red-hot Wilmington Blue Rocks for the start of a four-game series. First pitch is slated for 7:05 p.m. and only one game separates these two titans of the North after the Blue Rocks won their last 10 consecutive ballgames entering this evening's opener. The P-Nats have lost three of their last four contests including going 1-2 on their brief road trip to Frederick. Potomac's lead in the division is down to a single game after it reached as high as 4.5 games on July 27.
VS. THE ROCKS: Potomac's slight edge in the division can be attributed to their early season mastery of Wilmington after going 9-4 against the "Blue Crew" including six consecutive victories from April 30-June 15. The P-Nats pitching staff has a 2.92 ERA with five shutouts and a complete game while holding the Rocks to just a .246 BAA. The offense is hitting at a .297 clip against Wilmington with Danny Espinosa leading the charge batting .292 with a team-leading 3 HR and 10 RBI against the Rocks.
TODAY'S OPPOSING STARTER: LHP Michael Montgomery, 20, was a 1st round supplemental (36th overall) pick of the Kansas City Royals during the 2008 First-Year Player Draft out of Newhall (CA) High School. A former two-sport star in high school, Montgomery entered the 2009 campaign as the #4 rated prospect in the Royals organization and with the recent trade of RHP Dan Cortes to the Mariners, Montgomery becomes Kansas City's top ranked hurler. The southpaw began his professional career last season with the Rookie Arizona League Royals where he dominated the competition to the tune of a 2-1 record and a 1.68 ERA in 12 games (9 starts). He struck out 34 opposed to just 12 walks in 43.0 IP and was ranked as the top prospect in the AZL.
In 12 starts with Low-A Burlington in â09, Montgomery held opponents to a .206 batting average against and went 2-3 with a 2.17 ERA. Wilmington received this talented lefty on July 22nd and in two starts with the Rocks, Montgomery has allowed three earned runs in 9.0 IP with eight strikeouts and six walks against Carolina League competition.
