Salem RidgeYaks News Release

The Friendly Road?: Following yesterday's postponement, Salem now has eight road games over the next eight days, beginning tonight in Kinston. When the Sox and Tribe last met, Salem swept the Indians in three straight to open the second half. Salem has won six in a row and eight of their last ten meetings against the Indians.

Scoring First? Not So Much: After scoring first only 22 times in 69 games in the first half, the Sox began the second half scoring the first run in 14 of the first 23 games. But the trend has slipped away over the last 14 game stretch, in which the Sox have only scored first three times and have gone 4-10.

MLB Trade Deadline Felt in Salem: Around 3:15 PM on Friday, Red Sox pitcher Bryan Price, scheduled to start last night, was informed he had been included in a trade to the Cleve- land organization. Price joined pitchers Justin Masterson and Nick Hagadone in a package for Indians first-baseman/ catcher Victor Martinez. In 11 starts for Salem, Price went 1-6 with a 6.54 ERA. He made eight starts for Low-A Greenville to begin the year, going 3-2 with a 2.45 ERA. Replacing McKae on the hill, Dave McKae allowed one earned run in 5 innings.

Reza Returns: Tuesday night marked the return of infielder Aaron Reza to the Salem lineup. Out since May 18 with a bro- ken wrist, Reza batted second, played second base, and dou- bled in his first at-bat. Reza scored Salem's only run, coming home on Mike Jones' RBI single. Before returning to the Sa- lem Red Sox, Reza played three games last week for the GCL Red Sox. Reza DH'd once, played SS twice, and went 2-9. Sputtering Offense: With just one win in the last ten ball- games, Salem's offense has only compiled 27 runs. Eight of those runs were scored in the lone victory. Salem has hit .232 over the last 10 with just two home runs. Salem's 49 homers for the season is the second fewest in the Carolina League. Wilmington has 48 dingers on the year.

July Recap: Salem pitched to a 2.96 ERA in July, but struggled offensively late in the month to finish 12-16. Seth Garrison led the Red Sox with four wins and a 1.42 ERA in six starts, while Derrick Loop went six-for-six in save opportunities and did not allow a run in nine appearances. Daniel Nava hit .347 with 12 extra base hits in 20 games played in July, while Kris Negron played every game and hit .306. Salem's team ERA was second best to Wilmington (2.40) in the CL for July.
