Keys Rally Falls Short
July 3, 2009 - Carolina League (CarL1)
Frederick Keys News Release
A second inning to forget doomed Frederick on Friday night as Potomac registered five runs, aided by two costly Keys errors as the Keys fell 6-5 evening the series at a game apiece.
The Keys attempted to rally valiantly as they battled back with three runs in the fifth inning.
C Caleb Joseph, RF Billy Rowell and SS Pedro Florimon singled to load the bases with just one out. DH Wally Crancer laced a line drive near the line in right field that reached the wall, clearing the bases to bring Frederick within 5-3.
Trailing 6-3 in the sixth inning the Keys got a boost again from Rowell who hit a towering home run to right field to cut the Nationals lead to 6-5. For Rowell the home run was his eighth of the year. He now has hits in six-of-seven games since the all-star break.
The Keys put together two hits in the eighth inning and a one-out walk in the ninth but could not bring home a run against Frederick, MD native Dan Leatherman who notched his second save of the year.
Frederick will send relative newcomer Rick Zagone to the hill looking to build on his outstanding Carolina League debut. Zagone worked six scoreless innings last Sunday against Wilmington. First pitch is slated for 6:35 p.m. with The UPS Store Pre-Game Show set for 6:15 p.m. on the Keys Baseball Network.
The Keys return home Friday, July 10th at 7:00 p.m. against Myrtle Beach. The first 1,000 fans through the gate will receive a free Keys Baseball Card Set. Fireworks will follow the contest.
