Wilmington Blue Rocks News Release

Wilmington, DE - The Wilmington Blue Rocks offense is ice cold, as they were shut out for the 10th time in 2009 on Friday night, dropping a 7-0 decision to the Kinston Indians at Frawley Stadium.

For the second consecutive night the Rocks saw things fall apart in the fourth inning. On Thursday, Wilmington watched the Kinston Indians plate six runs in the road fourth. Friday may not have resulted in as many scores for the K-Tribe, but Kinston's three-run frame took a clear mental toll on the Blue Crew, and ended the game's competitive phase.

Wilmington starter Mario Santiago, who had struck out five of the first nine batters he faced, ran into immediate trouble in the costly inning. Kinston's Cord Phelps opened the stanza with a triple to right-center field. Tim Fedroff then followed with an infield single that put runners on the corners with no outs.

That brought up Lonnie Chisenhall, who roped an RBI single into right, and put Kinston in front, 1-0. Ole Sheldon then grounded into a run-scoring fielder's choice. Two batters later Lucas Montero tripled to center and brought home Sheldon to make it a three-run Kinston advantage.

In the sixth, the Indians added another run when Chisenhall reached on a walk and then stole a pair of bags. On the second theft, Rocks' catcher Matt Morizio bounced the throw to third into left field and Chisenhall was able to jog home.

Kinston added three more meaningless runs late to finish with the seven-run win.

The late insurance tallies were meaningless because the Wilmington offense showed almost no signs of life. Wilmington mustered only five hits as a team. From the bottom of the fourth until the ninth, the Rocks had only one baserunner.

Shortstop Anthony Seratelli did have two of the knocks. He was the only Blue Crewer to enjoy a multi-hit night.

Kinston starter Eric Berger (7-5) earned the win. The left-hander went six strong, allowing four hits and striking out four.

Santiago (3-9) dropped his fourth straight start by spreading four runs (three earned) over 5.2 innings. The right-hander allowed six hits, punched out six and walked two. He has not earned a win since June 8, a triumph that secured him league Pitcher of the Week honors.

The four-game series continues with an Independence Day matinee on Saturday afternoon. First pitch is scheduled for 2:05 p.m. Eduardo Paulino (3-4, 4.85) gets the start for the Rocks, while Kinston is scheduled to counter with right-hander Paolo Espino (1-5, 4.01). Espino is the first cousin of former Blue Rock Damaso Espino. Frawley Stadium's gates will open at 1 p.m.
