Winston-Salem Dash News Release
Lynchburg, VA - Dash starting pitcher Justin Edwards guided Winston-Salem to a 5-1 win over Lynchburg on Friday night at City Stadium. Edwards (2-0) tossed seven innings and held Lynchburg to one run on four hits. The southpaw only walked one and at one point retired 10 straight batters to earn the win.
The Dash pounced on Hillcats starting pitcher Matt McSwain for three runs in the first inning. Left fielder Tyler Kuhn, who matched a season-high with four hits, and second baseman Dale Mollenhauer singled to put runners on first and second with one out. Third baseman Brent Morel followed with a run-scoring double to plate the game's first run. Next, designated hitter Seth Loman connected on a two-run single that gave Winston-Salem a 3-0 lead.
The Dash added a pair of runs in the seventh inning against Lynchburg reliever Mike Colla. Mollenhauer tallied a one-out single and stole second base. Morel scored Mollenhauer when he banged his second double of the game off the right field wall. It was also Morel's team-leading 45th RBI of the season. One batter later, right fielder Salvador Sanchez, who finished with three hits, smacked an RBI double to put Winston-Salem in front 5-0.
The Hillcats finally touched Edwards for a run in the seventh inning when Jordy Mercer singled and Matt Hague doubled to start the inning. Eric Fryer collected an RBI ground out which would be the only run Edwards would allow. Winston-Salem reliever Nate Jones kept Lynchburg scoreless over the final two innings to preserve the victory.
McSwain (7-4) suffered the loss for Lynchburg after he allowed three runs on nine hits in five innings of work.
The Dash and Hillcats meet up in game three of this four-game series on Saturday night at City Stadium. The Dash will send RHP Gregory Infante (0-0, ----) to the mound for his Carolina League debut, while the Hillcats will counter with LHP Chi-Hung Cheng (6-3, 3.78). The first pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m.
