Lynchburg Hillcats News Release
Winston-Salem defeated Lynchburg 5-1 in the opener of a three-game series on Friday night at City Stadium. The Hillcats and Dash will meet in game two of the series on Saturday at 7:05 p.m. at Calvin Falwell Field.
The Dash wasted no time in grabbing the lead. Tyler Kuhn singled to lead off the game and reached second on Dale Mollenhauer's one-out single. Brent Morel drove in Kuhn with an RBI double and Seth Loman followed with a two-run single that scored Mollenhauer and Morel, giving the Dash a 3-0 advantage.
After Winston-Salem's three-run frame in the top of the first, Lynchburg starter Matt McSwain settled down and tossed four scoreless innings before giving way to Cats reliever Mike Colla in the sixth.
Unfortunately for Lynchburg, Dash starter Justin Edwards was even better, limiting the Hillcats to four hits and one earned run in seven innings of work.
Winston-Salem tacked on two more runs off Colla in the top of the seventh. Mollenhauer hit a one-out single and swiped second base. Morel laced an RBI double - his second of the night - down the left-field line, which plated Mollenhauer. After Colla retired Loman, Salvador Sanchez knocked in Morel with an RBI double that made it 5-0.
Lynchburg finally got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the seventh. Jordy Mercer singled leading off the frame and Matt Hague followed with a double, which put Cats at second and third with no outs. Mercer scored on Eric Fryer's RBI groundout, which reduced the deficit to 5-1.
The Cats failed to cash in on a scoring opportunity in the eighth. With runners at the corners and one out, Winston-Salem reliever Nate Jones retired Alex Presley and Mercer to thwart the potential Lynchburg rally.
Edwards (2-0) picked up the win for Winston-Salem and McSwain (7-4) was charged with the loss.
Lynchburg will seek to snap its season-long five game losing streak in game two of the series at City Stadium Saturday night. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
