Keys Overcome Late Deficit, Topple Pelicans

Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release

FREDERICK, MD - Fading fast in the Carolina League Southern Division's tight playoff race, the Pelicans are not picking a good time for one of their season's longest losing streaks.

Myrtle Beach dropped its sixth straight decision in a late shootout in Frederick 9-8 at the hands of the Keys, the home team completing a three-game sweep of the weekend series.

The Keys led early and led late despite some in-between Pelicans offense that led to a five-run Myrtle Beach lead entering the bottom of the seventh inning. Pedro Florimon's leadoff single and stolen base set up Robbie Widlansky for a first inning RBI single to give Frederick a 1-0 lead.

In the third, the Pelicans tied things on catcher Chris Anderson's first homer in a Pelicans uniform, and Myrtle Beach surged into the lead with a three-run fourth. Jon Mark Owings tripled home two and scored on a wild pitch by Keys reliever Jake Stevens. Frederick responded with two of its own in the bottom of the fourth on a two-run homer by Caleb Joseph to cut the Birds' advantage to 4-3.

It appeared Myrtle Beach had pulled away for good in the top of the seventh. Owings led off the inning with a double, and Chris Anderson walked. After a sacrifice bunt by Randy Gress put the pair in scoring position and Chais Fuller struck out swinging, however, the Pelicans still owned just a one-run lead with two gone. But Michael Fisher worked a walk to load the bases, and Donell Linares followed with a grand slam to put the Birds up 8-3. All of the Pelicans runs in the fourth and seventh came with two outs.

Frederick countered, however, with an RBI single by Florimon followed by another Joseph home run, this shot of the three-run variety, in the bottom of the seventh. One inning later, down 8-7, it was Matt Tucker's turn, and the outfielder blasted a two-run homer to give the Keys the lead and the win. Brett Jacobson (1-2), who suffered the loss in the Pelicans' walk-off win a week ago in Myrtle Beach, picked up the win, and Brandon Cooney (6) earned the save. Moises Hernandez (0-1) suffered the loss.

Myrtle Beach heads to Wilmington for its final road series of 2009, a three-game tilt with the Blue Rocks beginning Monday night in Delaware. Myrtle Beach returns home Friday, August 4 for the final regular season series of 2009 at BB&T Coastal Field against the Winston-Salem Dash. Tickets are available through the Pelicans box office at BB&T Coastal Field, by phone at (843)918-6000 or by visiting the Tickets page at MyrtleBeachPelicans.com.
