Historic Grainger Stadium - Kinston, North Carolina Game #130/Road #71
TODAY: The Potomac Nationals final road game of the 2009 season takes place this afternoon against the Kinston Indians from Historic Grainger Stadium. The finale begins at 2:00 p.m. with the P-Nats looking to salvage one game in this weekend series with the K-Tribe. They still trail Wilmington by 3.0 games with only 8 more contests left on their schedule. The Rocks lost yesterday but Potomac could not gain any ground on the "Blue Crew" after their 10-7 loss to Kinston on Saturday. *The Blue Rocks' Magic Number for the Second Half Division title is down to 6.*
TODAY'S OPPOSING STARTER: RHP Bryan Price, 23, was the sandwich pick (45th overall) of the Boston Red Sox in the 2008 Draft out of Rice University. Born in Bayfield, Colorado, Price went 4-4 with a 3.72 ERA in a team-high 30 appearances (one start) in his junior season with Rice. The Owls finished 47-15 that season and advanced to the College World Series that year. In parts of three seasons at Rice, Price struck out 76 batters in 65.2 IP and really blossomed as a setup man in his third year. His pro career commenced with Short-Season Lowell last year where he went 1-3 with a 3.83 ERA in 12 games, including nine starts. He struck out 43 men in 40 IP with the Spinners and started the 2009 campaign hurling for Low-A Greenville. He was 3-2 with the Drive and held lefties to just a .154 clip in his eight starts prior to being called up to Salem on May 26.
Price has struggled out of the gate at the Advanced-A level going 1-6 with a 6.54 ERA with the Red Sox prior to being added in the deal Cleveland made with Boston in exchange for C/1B Victor Martinez. He was assigned to Kinston on August 4 and after an initial hot start with the K-Tribe (2-0, 1.50 ERA in 3G/3GS), Price has failed to go 4.0 innings in each of his last two appearances (0-2, 5.2 IP, 11ER, 14H). In three starts against Potomac, Price has an ERA of 6.17 with 10 walks as opposed to 16 strikeouts in 11.2 IP. He made his last start with Salem against the P-Nats on July 26 and allowed 2 ER on 5 H in 5.2 IP.
