Frederick Comes From Five Runs Down To Up-End Myrtle Beach

August 30, 2009 - Carolina League (CarL1)
Frederick Keys News Release

Trailing by five runs heading into the bottom of the seventh inning, things did not look good for the Frederick Keys. They rallied, however, for four runs in the seventh and two more in the eighth to eventually beat the Myrtle Beach Pelicans 9-8 on Sunday afternoon.

The Keys took a 1-0 lead in the first inning. SS Pedro Florimon led off with a single. He stole second and third base, before scoring on 1B Robbie Widlansky's RBI-single.

Myrtle Beach tied it up in the third. Pelicans' C Chris Anderson led off the inning with a solo homerun to left field.

The Pelicans took the lead in the fourth. With runners on first and second and two down, RF Jon Mark Owings hit a line drive to right field. It looked like it'd be a single, but Frederick RF David Cash misplayed the ball. It rolled all the way to the wall, clearing the bases and allowing Owings to get into third with a two-run triple. Owings then scored on a wild pitch, making it 4-1.

Frederick pulled to within one, however, in the bottom of the fourth. With one on and one down, C Caleb Joseph hit a two-run homer to left.

Myrtle Beach made it a five-run game in the top of the seventh. The Pelicans loaded the bases with two outs for 1B Donell Linares. The slugger delivered a grand slam homerun to dead center field, giving Myrtle Beach an 8-3 lead.

The Keys didn't quit, though. Florimon led off the bottom of the seventh with an infield single. An errant pick-off throw allowed Florimon to get all the way to third. LF Matt Tucker then worked a walk. 3B Brandon Waring lifted a sac fly to center, scoring Florimon.

Frederick wasn't done. Widlansky worked a walk, putting two on with one out for Joseph. He drilled his second homerun of the game, a three-run shot to left-center. The blast pulled the Keys to within one.

The Keys took the lead for good in the eighth. CF Matt Angle came in to pinch hit for RF David Cash. He reached on a single. A batter later, Tucker clubbed a two-run homer down the right field line, giving Frederick their first lead since the third inning.

RHP Brett Jacobson (1-0) picked up the win, after allowing an earned run on two hits in 1.1 innings of work. RHP Moises Hernandez (0-1) took the loss. RHP Brandon Cooney worked a perfect ninth, picking up his sixth save of the season.

With the win, the Keys completed a three-game sweep of the Pelicans. Frederick has Monday off, but will open a three-game series with the Kinston Indians on Tuesday night. First pitch is scheduled for 7:00 PM. For ticket information, contact our box office at 1-877-8-GO-KEYS.
