THE HILLCATS: Last night Lynchburg and Winston-Salem split a doubleheader at Wake Forest Baseball Park...The Hillcats won game one 2-1, and the Dash took game two 9-7...Tonight they play the rubber-match of a three-game series at Winston-Salem and play the third game of eight in a row on the road...
VS. WINSTON-SALEM: This season the Hillcats have a 11-8 record against the Dash and are 5-4 at Wake Forest Baseball Park...Lynchburg holds the all-time advantage in the series with Winston-Salem 154-143, but they are 58-78 in the Triad...The Cats and the Dash were both first half champions and have secured a spot in the 2009 Carolina League playoffs...
PRESSURE POINT: Lynchburg has gone 8-for-54 (.148) with men in scoring position in the last six games...In the second half of the season Lynchburg is batting 15 points higher than they did in the first half of the season (.261, .246 in the first) to raise their overall batting average to .253...However, after batting .267 with men in scoring position in the first half, they are hitting just .236 with RISP in the second...
CLINCHING AGAIN: The game one win last night ensures a winning record for the Hillcats in 2009...It marks the first time since 2005 (78-62) Lynchburg will post an over .500 record...Prior to this season the Cats have had a winning record four times in their 14 seasons played...They have also secured their sixth playoff appearance since the team began play in 1995...
MAC ATTACK: Last night RHP Matt McSwain pitched four scoreless innings in game one to earn his 11th victory of the season...He is now tied for the most wins, seventh in ERA (3.40) and second in innings pitched (140 and 1/3 innings) in the Carolina League...His appearance last night was his first relief appearance of the season...In McSwain's last two games he has not allowed a run in 11 innings, both games were against the Dash...
DARN IMPRESSIVE: INF Chase d'Arnaud went a combined 5-for-7 last night in the doubleheader with a double, a homer, two RBI and two runs scored...His four hits in game one matched the most hits he has ad in a single game...In his last 12 games he is batting .340 (16-for-47) and he has hit in 11 of those contests...
STARTING TO POP: 1B Matt Hague went 2-for-6 with a home run, an RBI and two runs scored last night the doubleheader ...He has homered three times in has last six games, has four long balls against Winston-Salem and three of those bombs have been in the Triad..In his last nine games played he is 15-for-34 (.411) with four doubles, three home runs, five RBI and five runs scored...Hague is third in the Carolina League with his .291 batting average...
MIGHTY MERCER: INF Jordy Mercer went 2-for-7 with a homer, three RBI and a run scored last night and has now hit in eight straight games...He has hit in 16 of his last 17 games and over that time he is batting .328 (22-for-67) with four doubles, two homers, 13 RBI, nine runs scored, seven walks and two stolen bases...He is batting .313 (30-for-96) in August after he hit .226 (26-for-115) in July...Mercer leads the Hillcats with 74 RBI and is second in the league with 34 doubles...
TONIGHT'S OPPOSING PITCHER: LHP Justin Edwards was selected in the third round by the White Sox in the 2006 draft out of high school in Orlando, Florida...He made his professional debut that year at the Rookie level with Bristol and went 3-7 with a 5.30 ERA in 12 starts...In 2007 he advanced to full season Low-A Kannapolis and posted a 6-9 record with a 5.79 ERA in 27 games (21 starts) for the Intimidators...After missing all of last season after Tommy John surgery, he returned to Kannapolis this year and went 4-3 with a 3.80 ERA in eight starts before earning a promotion to High-A...With Winston-Salem he has made 12 starts and has gone 5-2 with a 4.01 ERA...He has made two starts against Lynchburg and has gone 1-1 with an 8.68 ERA...
