Lynchburg Hillcats News Release
Winston-Salem struck for six runs in the first inning and posted a 7-4 victory over Lynchburg at Wake Forest Baseball Park Sunday night. With the win, the Dash claimed a series victory over the Hillcats in the three-game set. The Hillcats will take on Potomac at Pfitzner Stadium on Tuesday night at 7:05 p.m.
The Dash (31-31, 69-61) seized control of the game from the outset by putting up six runs in the bottom of the first. Lynchburg starter Nate Adcock issued consecutive one-out walks to Greg Paiml and Salvador Sanchez. Brent Morel followed with a single that resulted in Paiml being thrown out at home by Cats centerfielder Jose De Los Santos for the second out of the frame. But Seth Loman smacked a three-run home run over the right-field wall that put Winston-Salem in front 3-0 and kept the inning alive.
Winston-Salem tacked on an additional three runs in the first on four hits. By the time Dale Mollenhauer grounded out in his second at-bat in the inning, the Dash had plated six runs on six hits and ensured that Adcock would not return for the second inning.
Meanwhile, Lynchburg (25-38, 70-62) struggled to find a rhythm offensively against Dash starter Justin Edwards, who allowed just three hits through the first six innings. The Cats finally got on the scoreboard with a run in the sixth. Chase d'Arnaud reached on a fielding error by Kent Gerst. Josh Harrison's fly out enabled d'Arnaud to advance from second to third and Jordy Mercer followed with a sacrifice fly that made it a 6-1 game.
Lynchburg's bats came alive in the top of the seventh. Matt Hague doubled to lead off the inning and advanced to third on Jared Keel's groundout. Eric Fryer drove in Hague with an RBI double, which ended the night for Edwards. After Hector Santiago retired Erik Huber, De Los Santos knocked in Fryer with an RBI single and d'Arnaud followed with an RBI double that reduced Winston-Salem's lead to 6-4.
The Dash added an insurance run in the bottom of the inning when Sanchez belted a solo home run off Cats reliever Ronald Uviedo.
The Cats attempted to rally in the top of the eighth, but Winston-Salem's Tyson Corley thwarted Lynchburg's threat. Santiago issued a one-out walk to Jamie Romak and Hague followed with a single. Corley entered the game and immediately retired Keel. After a passed ball allowed Romak and Hague to advance into scoring position, Corley struck out Fryer to end the inning.
Corley worked a scoreless ninth inning to preserve Winston-Salem's 7-4 win and earn his sixth save.
Edwards (6-2) allowed five hits and three runs - two of which were earned - along with a walk and a strikeout in 6 1/3 innings pitched to pick up the win. Adcock (3-2) took the loss after giving up six earned runs and six hits with two walks and no strikeouts in one inning of work.
Following an off day on Monday, Lynchburg will open a three-game series at Potomac's Pfitzner Stadium against the P-Nats on Tuesday night. The Cats are expected to start LHP Jeff Locke (4-8, 4.85 ERA) while Potomac is expected to counter with RHP Brad Peacock (3-2, 3.75 ERA). Game time is set for 7:05 p.m.
