Winston-Salem Dash News Release
Winston-Salem, NC - Winston-Salem used a six-run first inning to propel them to a 7-4 victory over Lynchburg in the series finale on Sunday evening at Wake Forest Baseball Park. A night after going 3-for-4 with a home run and two RBI, Seth Loman smacked another home run and drove in three to help the Dash maintain its hold of first place in the Southern Division.
Winston-Salem pounced on Hillcats starting pitcher Nate Adcock for six runs in the first inning as they sent 10 batters to the plate. With one out, Greg Paiml and Salvador Sanchez were walked. Brent Morel lined a single into center field, but Jose De Los Santos gunned down Paiml at the plate trying to score from second base. The two-out rally commenced as Loman belted a three-run home run over the right field wall. It was his 13th long ball of the season and second in as many nights.
The rally continued as Justin Greene singled, stole second base and scored on a single by John Curtis. Joe Persichina, who entered the contest with 10 hits in his last five games, followed with a single and Kent Gerst capped off the inning with a two-run double to give Winston-Salem a 6-0 lead.
Adcock (3-2) was pulled after the first inning and surrendered six runs on six hits to suffer the loss.
The Hillcats plated an unearned run in the sixth when left fielder Kent Gerst dropped a fly ball by Chase d'Arnaud for a two-base error. One out later, Jordy Mercer registered an RBI sacrifice fly. Lynchburg trimmed their deficit to two with a three-run seventh inning. Eric Fryer and d'Arnaud collected RBI doubles and Jose De Los Santos added a run-scoring single to bring the Hillcats within 6-4.
Salvador Sanchez put an emphatic end to the Hillcats threat in the bottom of the seventh inning when he launched a solo home run off Ronald Uviedo. Justin Edwards (6-2) got the start for the Dash and allowed three runs (two earned) on five hits in 6.1 innings to garner the win. Tyson Corley recorded the final five outs to earn his sixth save of the season.
The Dash is off on Monday, but continues their home stand on Tuesday with a doubleheader against the Salem Red Sox at Wake Forest Baseball Park. Both games are scheduled for seven innings and the first pitch of the opener is set for 6 p.m.
