April 24, 2010 - Carolina League (CarL1)
Frederick Keys News Release
On a cold, Saturday afternoon, the Keys fell big to the Salem Red Sox, 10-3. Salem trailed 3-1 entering the sixth inning but scored three in the sixth and five in the seventh and cruised to the victory. Keys starting pitcher, Rick Zagone, pitched well but got a no-decision on the afternoon. In 5 2/3 innings, he allowed 3 runs to score, 2 earned, on five hits while striking out one.
Frederick struck first as 3B Billy Rowell scored on a RBI single by 1B Jacob Julius in the second. Keys scored another run in the third on a LJ Hoes RBI single that drove in RF Ronnie Welty. Oscar Tejada hit a solo homerun in the fourth to put Salem on the board but Frederick would quickly respond. With LF Xavier Avery on first, CF Kyle Hudson hit a groundball to second, Tejada could not field it and Avery scored from second to give the Keys a two-run advantage after five.
The tides turned in the sixth when Salem scored three in the inning. With two-out and 1B Anthony Rizzo on second, 3B Will Middlebrooks drove the Rick Zagone pitch for a RBI double. That was Zagone's final pitch of the afternoon. Raul Rivero came in to relieve Zagone. Rivero got the first batter he faced, Oscar Tejada, to hit a groundball but SS Bobby Stevens' throw to first was in the dirt and Middlebrooks scored from second to tie the game. Alex Hassan, the next Red Sox to come to the plate, hit a Rivero pitch just over the outstretched arm of 2B Buck Britton for an RBI single. Frederick trailed 4-3 after six.
The Red Sox scored five more runs in the seventh including a three-run homer by Tejada, his second of the game. Salem added one more run in the ninth to cap off the 10-3 win. Mitch Herold picked up his first victory of the season out Salem's bullpen. Herold did not allow a run in his 2 1/3 innings of work. Raul Rivero got the loss for the Keys. He surrendered six runs, five earned, over 1 1/3 innings pitched.
Salem improved to 12-4 with the victory while Frederick fell to 10-6. The rubber match of the three-game series will take place on Sunday afternoon at 2:00 p.m. RHP Ryan O'Shea (1-2, 7.21) will start for Frederick and he will be opposed by RHP Brock Huntzinger (0-1, 6.18).
Gates open Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. for "Sunday Funday" and the first "Meet the Team" of the season. The entire Frederick Keys team will be on the field from 1-1:30, signing autographs and interacting with fans. For tickets call 1-888-8-GO-KEYS or purchase online at www.frederickkeys.com.
