Winston-Salem Dash News Release

WINSTON-SALEM, NC - Michael Montgomery stifled Winston-Salem's bats for most of the night as the Dash lost its second straight game to the Wilmington Blue Rocks 7-3 on a soggy Saturday night at BB&T Ballpark. Winston (11-5) has lost back-to-back games after winning its previous nine and will try to avoid the three-game sweep on Sunday afternoon.

A tremendous pitching matchup between the Dash's Justin Edwards and the Rocks' Montgomery was only dampened by a persistent light rain that fell throughout the night from the second inning on. Wilmington (8-8) grabbed the lead in the second off back-to-back RBI singles by Ryan Wood and Eddie Prasch to go ahead 2-0.

Edwards (2-1) battled into the sixth, when the Blue Rocks struck for two more on Jason Taylor's run-scoring double and an RBI single from Salvador Perez.

Montgomery (2-0) entered the game leading the Carolina League in strikeouts and was second in ERA. He kept the Dash off-balance through the first six innings, but tired in the seventh. Jason Bour tripled with two outs and scored on Kenny Williams, Jr.'s RBI double. Williams scored on a base hit by Kyle Shelton to halve the Wilmington lead to 4-2.

The Blue Rocks starter was lifted in favor of Patrick Keating after the Shelton single. Eight of Keating's first nine pitches missed the strike zone and he walked the bases loaded with two outs. He was able to retire Brandon Short on a groundout to escape the threat and keep the Blue Rocks ahead.

Each team registered a run via a sacrifice fly in the eighth, and Wilmington added two more in the ninth to pad its lead. Prasch hit his first home run of the season off Dan Remenowsky and Patrick Norris drove in a run on a fielder's choice to make it 7-3 Blue Rocks.

Keating struck out the side in the ninth inning to pick up his first save and preserve Wilmington's second straight win over the Dash.

Edwards allowed four runs in sixth inning for his first loss, while Montgomery collected his second win, allowing two runs over 6.2 innings.

Both Short and Jon Gilmore extended their hitting streaks to 13 and 12, respectively. Short singled to start the Dash's offensive night and Gilmore singled to right in the fourth inning.

Winston-Salem attempts to salvage the series on Sunday afternoon when Nate Jones (1-1, 2.20) opposes Tim Melville (1-1, 8.68). First pitch is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. The pre-game show begins at 1:45 on www.wsdash.com.
