Frederick Keys News Release

After a long night at Harry Grove Stadium, the Keys held on to defeat the Salem Red Sox, 5-3. Neither starting pitcher lasted longer than four innings but Frederick's bullpen stepped up. Cole McCurry and Brett Jacobson combined to allow just one unearned run over 5.1 innings. McCurry, Jacobson, and Keys starter Nathan Moreau struck out a total of 15 batters on the night.

Following a scoreless first inning, Salem took the lead on a RBI single by SS Ryan Dent. LHP Nathan Moreau walked the next batter, 1B Drew Hedman, to load the bases. Moreau got out of the big jam after a Mitch Dening ground out ended the inning.

Frederick responded in the bottom of the inning. 2B LJ Hoes led off with a single and DH Miguel Abreu followed with a double. With two men in scoring position, 1B Buck Britton grounded out to second but it was able to score Hoes from third. After Caleb Clay struck out SS Pedro Florimon, C Brian Ward doubled down the rightfield line to bring home Abreu from third. The Ward RBI double gave the Keys a 2-1 lead after two.

The Keys added another run in the bottom of the third on a Billy Rowell RBI single.

Leading by two runs, LHP Nathan Moreau ran into trouble in the top of the fourth. After retiring the first two batters of the inning, Moreau loaded the bases and was pulled from the game for LHP Cole McCurry. McCurry uncorked a wild pitch against RF Mitch Dening that scored C Dan Butler. McCurry settled down and struck out Dening to end the inning.

Salem starter, Caleb Clay, was relieved after four innings of work on the night. With two men on and two out in the bottom of the fifth, SS Pedro Florimon hit a two-run single against Red Sox relief pitcher, RHP Seth Garrison, which gave the Keys a three-run advantage.

Frederick allowed an unearned run to score in the top of the seventh but prevailed, 5-3, in the series opener on Monday night. LHP Cole McCurry picked up his fifth win of the season after surrendering one unearned run on two hits while striking out seven and walking three. RHP Brett Jacobson tossed 2.1 scoreless innings en route to his first save of the year. Jacobson's ERA is now 2.14 on the season.

RHP Oliver Drake (2-5, 4.50) gets the nod for Frederick on Tuesday night for game two of the three-game set. RHP Miguel Gonzalez (5-2, 4.70) will toss for Salem. First pitch is set for 7:00 p.m. on Guaranteed Win Tuesday at Harry Grove Stadium. If the Keys lose, every one in attendance can redeem their ticket for any remaining Monday - Thursday regular season home game..
