Winston-Salem Dash News Release
WINSTON-SALEM, NC (AUGUST 2, 2010) - Winston-Salem returned to its winning ways at home, blasting Wilmington for an 8-3 win on Monday night at BB&T Ballpark. Jon Gilmore and Seth Loman each drove in two runs for the Dash, which took the first game of the series and ended a three-game losing streak.
Winston (18-18, 61-45) got off to a quick start against Manauris Baez with two runs in the first inning. Gilmore hit an RBI single and then scored on an RBI base hit by Josh Phegley to put the Dash up 2-0.
Baez (1-4) settled down over the next three innings, retiring 11 straight batters at one point. That kept the Blue Rocks in a position to come back, as they scored two runs in the top of the fifth inning against Nate Jones.
The first two men singled and stole a base, putting two in scoring position with no outs. Adrian Ortiz drove in one run with a ground out to second base and Christian Colon followed suit with an RBI groundout to the shortstop to tie the game at two.
The Dash quickly re-established its lead in the bottom of the fifth. With one out, Kenny Williams, Jr. singled to center and moved to second on a bunt base hit by Mike Richard. Brandon Short walked to load the bases. It appeared Baez might be able to squirm free of trouble after Williams was forced out at home on a fielder's choice by Garcia, but the near-escape proved to be a mirage. Gilmore bounced an infield single to the right side to drive home Richard and re-load the bases with Winston ahead 3-2.
Short scrambled home when the second offering to Loman went to the backstop for a wild pitch. Loman then hit a grounder up the middle to second baseman Rey Navarro. He booted the ball and two more runs came in to score for the Dash. The four-run inning gave Winston-Salem a 6-2 lead.
Wilmington (20-17, 52-55) got one of those runs back on a Nick Francis home run. He led off the sixth with a solo shot to make it a three-run game, but that was the closest the Blue Rocks got to the Dash for the rest of the night.
Loman blasted a two-run homer off reliever Jairo Cuevas in the bottom of the seventh to stretch Winston's lead to five. It was his 17th bomb of the season, tying him with Potomac's Tyler Moore for the league-lead.
Hector Santiago finished off the game by pitching three scoreless innings of relief for his first save of the season. He preserved the win for Jones (8-4), who picked up his first victory since July 4. Jones allowed three runs on nine hits over six innings.
Baez was dealt the defeat, surrendering seven runs (five earned) on seven hits in 6.2 innings.
The Dash rebounded from being swept at Myrtle Beach over the weekend and evened its season series with Wilmington at seven.
The two teams play game two of the series on Tuesday night. LHP Joe Serafin (0-2, 8.24) opposes RHP Aaron Crow (0-0, 0.00), a two-time former first-round draft pick. First pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m. with the audio broadcast starting at 6:45 on www.wsdash.com .
