Lynchburg Hillcats News Release
Jose Gualdron doubled in a run, but it wasn't enough to lift the Hillcats in the opener. Potomac came from three down to tie the game, and won it in 11 innings, 6-4. The loss was Lynchburg's fourth straight.
Potomac jumped on the board in the first inning. Dan Lyons scored from third after a passed ball got away from catcher Jordan Wideman.
After that, Lynchburg put up four unanswered runs. Denis Phipps led off the second inning with a walk. Chris Richburg singled and Brodie Greene hit into a fielder's choice. That put Cats at the corners with one out. Kyle Day then walked, but Nationals catcher Derek Norris threw the ball into center field, scoring Phipps from third. That also advanced Greene to third. Greene scored on the double by Jose Gualdron.
In the third inning, the Cats added two more. Cody Puckett led off the inning with a single. He reached second on a wild pitch, and then scored on the single by Phipps. After stealing second, Phipps scored on Richburg's single.
Hillcats starter Chase Ware left the game after five innings. He gave up one unearned run and four hits. He walked four and struck out three. But the bullpen couldn't hold his lead.
Tyler Moore continued his red-hot play for Potomac in the sixth. He led off the inning with a home run. The next two hitters singled to put the tying run at first. After a sacrifice bunt by Chris Curran, the runners were at second and third. Reliever Jeff Jeffords retired Francisco Soriano, but let up a game-tying double to Steve Lombardozzi.
Nick Christiani relieved Jeffords and walked the next two hitters to load the bases, but got out of the jam.
The offenses went silent until the 11th inning. Potomac's Bill Rhinehart reached on a one-out double. The next two hitters reached to load the bases. Hillcats pitcher Daniel Guerrero threw a wild pitch to Francisco Soriano, scoring the go-ahead run. Soriano was walked, keeping the bases loaded. Lombardozzi hit a sac fly to put the Nationals up 6-4.
Though he was erratic, Ware threw well, but gets no decision. Guerrero gets the loss and Patrick McCoy gets the win after striking out six of the 10 batters he faced. The Hillcats pitching staff totaled 11 walks.
Lynchburg and Potomac continue their three game series tomorrow night at 7:05 p.m. Lance Janke (3-6, 6.28) starts for the Cats opposite Pat Lehman (3-2, 4.79) for the Nats. ABC 13 presents Dollar Menu Tuesday. Hot Dogs, Hamburgers, Peanuts, Popcorn, Candy and Chips will be sold for $1 each.
