LYNCHBURG HILLCATS (14-20, 43-61) vs. POTOMAC NATIONALS (18-16, 49-55)
August 2nd, 2010 -- 7:05 PM
Calvin Falwell Field @ Lynchburg City Stadium
RHP Chase Ware (1-2, 3.65) vs. RHP Trevor Holder (0-2, 3.44)
THE HILLCATS: On Saturday night Lynchburg and Salem had the final game of their three-game series and the last game of their season series rained out...On Friday night the Red Sox blanked the Hillcats 2-0 in the second game of the set... After winning four games in a row, the Hillcats have lost three straight...Tonight they play the first game of a three-game series with Kinston...The Cats are playing the only three home games in a stretch of 14 out of 17 on the road...
VS. POTOMAC: The Hillcats are 6-7 against the Nationals thus far this season and are 4-3 at City Stadium...Lynchburg is 160-152 against Potomac all-time and are 87-74 at the Pfitz...Last season the Cats won the season series with the P-Nats 11-9...
NOT SO FLY JULY: In the month of July the Hillcats posted a 9-18 mark...Their .333 winning percentage is the worst month of the season for Lynchburg...The nine wins ties April for the least amount of victories in a month and in April the Cats only played 21 games...The team had a .269 batting average with a 4.60 team ERA...
I'M RUBBER, YOU'RE GLUE: Friday night Lynchburg was shutout for the sixth time this season...The last two times the Cats were held scoreless they returned the favor the next game by shutting out their opponent...On three separate occasions this season Lynchburg handed out a bagel the game after they were given one...The Hillcats have blanked their opponent nine times...
WHERE'S THE LOVE: RHP Jordan Hotchkiss threw six and 2/3 innings Friday night and allowed two runs in taking a tough-luck loss...It was the fifth time in his 12 starts that he went at least five innings and gave up two runs or less and did not earn a win and it was the second time this season he lost when giving the team a quality start...The Hillcats are giving Hotchkiss just 3.6 runs of support per game (Lynchburg averages four runs per contest) and they have been shutout now twice in his starts...In his 12 starts the Cats are just 6-6 despite the fact that the right-hander is leading the league in ERA (2.47)...
DON'T FORGET MY NUMBER: RHP Nick Christiani allowed four runs in 2/3 of an inning and took a blown save and the loss Thursday night...This season against Salem the right-hander is 0-1 with a 14.21 ERA (ten earned runs in six and 1/3 innings) and both of his blown saves this year have come against the Red Sox...Against the rest of the league he has a 2.25 ERA...Christiani was posting a 1.04 ERA when he went on the Disabled List on June 24th, but since returning his ERA has been 10.95 (15 earned runs in 12 and 1/3 innings)...On Wednesday night at Frederick LHP Donnie Joseph allowed three runs (two earned) in 2/3 of an inning and took a blown save and a loss...Against the Keys the lefty is 0-3 with a 6.48 ERA (six earned runs in eight a 1/3 innings) and both of his blown saves this year have come against them...This season against the res of the league he has a 2.00 ERA and is 11-for-11 in save opportunities...
SLAP SHOTS: In the top of the third inning Thursday night Lynchburg hit back-to-back home runs for the first time this season and in the same frame hit three homers in the same inning for the first time this year...UTIL Cody Puckett, UTIL Neftali Soto and INF Chris Richburg all went deep in the inning...After the back-to-back bombs OF Denis Phipps took a pitch that went behind him from RHP Brock Huntzinger and then slowly walked out towards the mound...The benches cleared with little incident and the situation was defused...After Phipps flew out to right-center he had some words with Huntzinger again and was ejected from the ballgame...The homer by Puckett was his first since June 28th versus Myrtle Beach, a period of 100 at-bats in between dingers...
HURRAY FOR DAY: OF Kyle Day went 1-for-3 with a walk Thursday night and has now hit in a season-high 15 straight games, which has now passed the longest streak by a Hillcat this season (OF Josh Fellhauer, INF Alex Buchholz and OF Denis Phipps all hit in 11 straight)...In those 15 games he is batting .397 (23-for-58)...Over a longer stretch he has hit in 22 of his last 24 games and over that time he is 35-for-88 (.398) with five doubles, a triple, two home runs (including a grand slam), 17 RBI, 13 runs scored, eight walks and three steals...In those 25 contests Day has raised his average from .226 to .285...
TONIGHT'S OPPOSING PITCHER: RHP Trevor Holder was a third round selection by the Nationals in the 2009 draft out of the University of Georgia...In four years with the Bulldogs he went a combined 22-15 with a 4.51 ERA in 73 games (50 starts)...Last year he made his professional debut last year with Short Season Low-A Vermont and had no decisions in two starts with a 5.06 ERA...He next made three starts with full season Low-A Hagerstown and went 2-0 with a 3.55 ERA with the Suns...He finished the season with Potomac and posted a 2-3 mark with a 9.26 ERA in six starts...This season he returned to Hagerstown and had a 4-3 mark with a 3.15 ERA in 12 starts before earning a promotion back to the P-Nats...With Potomac he has gone 0-2 with a 5.44 ERA in eight games (seven starts)...Holder made his last start of the season last year against Lynchburg and gave up eight runs (six earned) in four and 1/3 innings and took the loss at Pfitzner Stadium...This season he has started against the Hillcats once and he gave up three unearned runs and took the loss on June 20th at City Stadium...
