
Kernels rally for 5-4 win over Bees

September 7, 2009 - The Cedar Rapids Kernels wrapped up the 2009 MWL regular season with a 5-4 win over the Burlington Bees on Monday afternoon at Perfect Game Field at Veterans Memorial Stadium. The Kernels scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning and added an important insurance run in the eighth inning to erase a Burlington 3-2 lead.
Darwin Perez went 3-5 with two doubles and an RBI and Angel Castillo was 2-3 and hit his 12th HR of the season in the sixth inning. Beau Brooks was 2-4 with a double and RBI and Matt Crawford was 2-4 with an RBI and stolen base. Juan Graterol was 2-3 with 2 RBI and Jayson Taylor was 3-4 with a double and two runs to lead Burlington.
Kernels starter Manaurys Correa (8-10) allowed three runs on eight hits and struck out one over eight innings for the win. Correa finished the season as the MWL leader in innings with 163. Nick Pugliese allowed an unearned run in pitching the first two outs of the ninth and Andrew Taylor closed the door with a strikeout to notch his eighth save. Burlington reliever Dusty Odenbach (2-1) allowed three runs on four hits over 1.1 innings in taking the loss.
The Kernels finish the MWL regular season with a 78-60 record and 38-30 in the MWL second half. They open the best-of-three series in the first round of the MWL playoffs on the road at Peoria as Will Smith starts for the Kernels against Austin Bibens-Dirkx for Peoria. Game time is 6:30 p.m.
