
Loons fall to Dayton in regular season finale

IDLAND, MI - The Dayton Dragons wrapped up the regular season with a 4-3 victory over the Great Lakes Loons Monday afternoon at Dow Diamond. The Dragons never trailed in the game, although the Loons were within one run three times, including at the end.
Lefty Jon Dutton (0-3) made his first start of the season and was the tough-luck losing pitcher. He allowed a run in the first. Cody Puckett doubled, stole second and scored on a ground out by Carlos Mendez. Dutton allowed just two hits and no walks. He struck out six in the game, striking out six of seven batters faced at one point between the second and fourth innings.
Four different pitchers threw for the Loons. Jordan Pratt hurled two scoreless frames in relief of Dutton. Lefty Roberto Feliciano followed and surrendered two in the seventh, highlighted by a bases-loaded double by Chase Weems.
The Loons responded in the seventh with two runs of their own. Nick Buss singled home Anthony Hatch. Later in the inning, Jerry Sands scored on a wild pitch delivered by Mike Bohana.
The two teams exchanged runs in the eighth. After back-to-back singles, a sacrifice bunt and a sac fly brought home their fourth run. The Loons scored in the inning on a sac fly by Joe Becker, but wouldn't get any closer than 4-3.
The Loons wrapped up their most successful regular season with a record of 81-59 and complete their best half at 41-29.
Tuesday is a league-wide off day before the start of the Midwest League playoffs Wednesday. Game time Wednesday at Dow Diamond is 7:05pm against the West Michigan Whitecaps. Gates open at 6pm. Tickets still remain for the game at Loons.com or by calling 989-837-BALL. The game will feature the popular Chemical Bank Dollar Family Feast Night promotion. The game also will be carried on the Loons' flagship radio home, ESPN 100.9-FM.
Left-hander Aaron Miller, who finished the regular season 3-1 with a 2.08 ERA in seven starts, is scheduled to start for the Loons. He was the Dodgers' top pick in this year's draft out of Baylor University. His scheduled opponent is left-hander Casey Crosby, the Tigers' No. 3 prospect according to Baseball America. He finished the regular season10-4 with a 2.41 ERA and a streak of 21 2/3 consecutive innings without allowing an earned run.
