South Bend Silver Hawks News Release
South Bend, IN - The South Bend Silver Hawks wrapped up the regular season with a 4-3 win over the Lansing Lugnuts on Monday afternoon at Coveleski Stadium. With the win, the Hawks finish the second half at 32-37 and their final overall record for the regular season stands at 59-78.
South Bend now has a day off before they begin the playoffs on Wednesday night at Coveleski Stadium against the Fort Wayne TinCaps.
Trailing 1-0, the Hawks scored two runs in the fourth and two in the fifth to take a lead they wouldn't relinquish. Lansing starter Joel Carreno (LP, 2-4) allowed back-to-back singles to Rossmel Perez and Clayton Conner with one out in the fourth, and Isaias Asencio followed with an RBI double to tie the game. Jake Elmore's sacrifice fly gave the Hawks the 2-1 lead after four.
South Bend extended the lead in the fifth. Victor Estevez led off with a double and moved to third on Alfredo Marte's single. Ryan Wheeler followed with an RBI double and Justin Parker added a sacrifice fly for the 4-1 lead.
Lansing tried to chip away, scoring single runs in the sixth and seventh innings, but they could only get within one. Victor Capellan (ND) pitched a scoreless eighth and Justin Mace (SV, 12) pitched around a one out double in the ninth to earn the save.
Brett Moorhouse (ND) started for South Bend, and turned in a solid, yet short outing. Moorhouse allowed only one run on three hits over 4.0 innings, but did not go the required minimum of 5.0 innings to earn a win.
Jordan Meaker (WP, 4-1) followed with 2.0 innings of one run ball, and Sean Morgan (ND) allowed a run over his 1.0 inning on the mound in the final tune-up for the playoffs.
The first round of the playoffs begins Wednesday evening, with the Silver Hawks hosting the Fort Wayne TinCaps in game one of the best-of-three series. Game time is scheduled for 6:30 PM Eastern Time with RHP Eric Smith (0-0, 2.76 ERA) starting for South Bend against Fort Wayne's RHP Simon Castro (10-6, 3.33 ERA). Pregame coverage begins at 6:10 PM Eastern Time on 1620 ESPN Radio and online at www.silverhawks.com.
