Lugnuts Close Out 2009 With 4-3 Loss to Hawks

SOUTH BEND, Ind. - The South Bend Silver Hawks (32-37; 59-78) used two-run rallies in the fourth and fifth innings to defeat the Lansing Lugnuts (28-41; 54-84), 4-3, on Monday afternoon at The Cove, finishing off the 2009 regular season.

Lansing finished the campaign with a franchise record for losses, topping the previous mark of 75 defeats set in 2001.

Clean-up hitter Ryan Wheeler went 3-for-4 with an RBI single to spur on the Silver Hawks, who finished off their victory in two hours and nine minutes.

Jordan Meaker (4-1) earned the victory for South Bend with two innings of one-run relief, succeeding starter Brett Moorhouse's four innings of work. Justin Mace pitched the ninth for his 12th save.

Lugnuts starter Joel Carreno (2-4) suffered the loss, allowing all four runs on seven hits in five innings.

Jason Roenicke worked a scoreless sixth inning for Lansing, followed by Dustin Antolin's scoreless seventh, and Jonas Cuotto's perfect ninth.

In the losing cause, Balbino Fuenmayor went 2-for-4 with two runs scored.
