West Michigan Whitecaps News Release

COMSTOCK PARK, MI- Two key runs in the top of the ninth inning gave the Fort Wayne Tincaps a 3-1 win over the West Michigan Whitecaps in the regular season finale and a sweep of the three-game series. Fort Wayne limited the Whitecaps to just two runs for the entire series at Fifth Third Ballpark.

Whitecaps' starter Anthony Shawler was exceptional on the mound. Shawler allowed 3 hits over 8 innings giving up 1 run in the loss. He struck out seven Tincaps.

Fort Wayne tallied a run in the second on consecutive singles by Allan Dykstra and Yefri Carvajal. Carvajal hit a flare down the left field line that eluded ‘Caps' third baseman Ronnie Bourquin and helped Dykstra to score from first.

The game remained 1-0 Fort Wayne until the top of the ninth. Blake Tekotte drew a one-out walk, and the Tincaps strung together three straight singles and a sacrifice fly to make the lead 3-0.

West Michigan tried to rally in the bottom of the ninth. Alden Carrithers led off the inning with a double. Billy Nowlin cracked a one-out, RBI single to plate Carrithers. Brandon Douglas hit a double with two outs to push Nowlin to third and put himself at second with two outs. But with the tying runs on base, Avisail Garcia grounded out to short stop to end the game.

Stiven Osuna picks up the win for Fort Wayne. Osuna lasted 5 innings, giving up 3 hits and gathering 6 strikeouts.

Alden Carrithers, Ronnie Bourquin, and Brandon Douglas all had two hits for the Whitecaps.

The Whitecaps begin the playoffs on Wednesday night at 7:05 p.m. ET in Midland against the Great Lakes Loons. Casey Crosby will start the series opener for the Whitecaps in the best-of-three matchup.
