Cedar Rapids Kernels News Release

August 27, 2006 - It certainly was the longest game in the short history of Veterans Memorial Stadium, and could very well be the longest game in the history of Cedar Rapids professional baseball as the Cedar Rapids Kernels beat the Beloit Snappers in 19 innings, 3-2, on a Dallas Morris RBI single.

The game lasted 4:57 and was played in front of crowd of 3,520 on 1,000 Minute Summer Reader Recognition Day at the ballpark.

Beloit starter Alexander Smit had the Kernels completely baffled as he no-hit the Kernels through seven innings. Smit struck out eleven and walked four. Kernels starter Andy Hill, while not quite as impressive, was equally effective as he held the Snappers to a run on six hits over seven innings with three strikeouts.

The Kernels struck out 25 times over the 19 innings as Jordan Renz and Josh Davies each had 5 K's.

However, the hero of this day was Dallas Morris and the Kernel bullpen.

Morris was 3 for 8 with all three Kernels RBI including the game winner in the 19th.

The Kernel bullpen pitched 12 innings of relief and kept the Kernels in the game the whole day as Tim Mattison (3-6) picked up the win. Daniel Hawkins, Mike Pete, Darren O'Day, Chris Howell and newcomer Brendan Wilson all combined to keep the Kernels within striking distance.

Beloit reliever Adam Hawes (4-4) took the loss.

The win improves the Kernels second half record to 29-32 and moves the Kernels to 5-1/2 games behind Beloit for the final MWL playoff spot with eight games remaining in the second half.

The Kernels welcome the Burlington Bees to Veterans Memorial Stadium on Monday to open the final four games of the 2006 regular season. Game time is 7 pm on Monday and the gates open at 6 pm. It will be Mix 96.5 Dollar Dog Monday as regular size red-hots are just a buck all game long.
