Burlington Bees News Release
Burlington, IA (August 27, 2006) Jeff Baisley's two-run double in the top of the ninth inning drove in the winning runs for the Kane County Cougars (37-25, 77-54) in a 3-1 win over the Burlington Bees (25-37, 60-69) at Community Field this afternoon. Baisley, just named the Midwest League MVP last week, was 0-7 in this series before delivering that hit. The Bees and Cougars split this four-game series and split the season series 7-7.
Pitching ruled most of the day. Bees' starter Dan Cortes allowed just one run in 5.2 innings while striking out five. The Cougars got on the board in the top of the second. Jose Pineda reached on a strikeout when he swung at a pitch in the dirt that ended up at the screen. He would steal second and score on a two-out single by Matt Sulentic.
The Bees tied the game in the bottom of the fourth inning. Brady Everett ripped a one-out double down the left field line that extended his hitting streak to nine in a row. Jeff Howell followed with a single up the middle to drive him in for his second hit of the series. That was the only run allowed by Cougars starter Ben Jukich through five innings of work.
Cody Harkcom took over for Cortes with two on and two outs in the sixth and got Wes Long to fly out to end the inning. Harkcom limited the Cougars to a hit and a walk through the eighth and came back out to start the top of the ninth. After getting Long to popout to start the inning, Harkcom walked Chad Boyd and gave up a single to Frank Martinez that Felix Peralta overran in right for an error that allowed Boyd to get to third. The Bees then brought Chris Hayes in from the bullpen and Baisley hit his first pitch into the gap in left-center for a double that drove in both runners and gave the Cougars the lead. Hayes finished off the inning, but the damage was done.
With the lead, the Cougars turned to closer Brad Kilby for the bottom of the ninth inning and he set down the Bees in order for his ninth save. Joe Newby (5-0) pitched three scoreless innings to bridge the gap and picked up the win. Harkcom (3-2) was cha) was charged with the loss.
The Bees have just eight games left before the end of the season and will start a four-game series against the Cedar Rapids Kernels at Veterans Memorial Stadium tomorrow night at 7:00. RH Mario Santiago (2-6, 6.36) will start for the Bees against RH Anthony Ortega (1-6, 4.78) for the Kernels. The game will be broadcast live on KBUR AM 1490 and KBKB AM 1360 with the pre-game show starting at 6:40. The Bees have just two more home games left coming up on Friday and Saturday night against the Swing of the Quad Cities. RH Luke Hochevar, the #1 overall pick in this year's draft, will make his final start on Friday night for the Bees and Saturday is Fan Appreciation Night.
