West Michigan Whitecaps News Release
COMSTOCK PARK - With two out in the bottom of the ninth, pinch hitter Matt Joyce doubled to start a two run rally, but the Whitecaps stranded the tying run in scoring position as Fort Wayne held on for a 4-2 win. The Wizards earned a 2-2 split in the series, which was a possible first round playoff preview.
Pedro Cotto delivered a bases loaded single to keep the game alive for the Whitecaps in the bottom of the ninth. A wild pitch put Will Rhymes at third and Cotto at second with tying run. But the next batter, Cameron Maybin grounded out to end the game.
Luke French (11-8) took the loss for West Michigan. He allowed three runs on six hits and two walks in just three innings of work.
Wade LeBlanc (3-1) pitched the first five innings for Fort Wayne to pick up the win.
Closer John Madden, who had not pitched in the series allowed both of the runs in the ninth.
The Whitecaps are now 0-36 this season when trailing after nine innings.
